Missing Words

I was wondering what we do about missing words? Like for example, if a sentence reads, "A real being stood before them and he something important to say. This sentence is clearly missing the word had, but should we add to the author's narrative, or just correct what is already there? I'm thinking that is adding words. How should we handle that? Are there other words the author could have chosen rather than had?

That is an error. It's clearly missing a word and is not grammatically correct.

A real being stood before them and he something important to say.
Correction: A real being stood before them and had something important to say.
