Starting a sentence with And

Is starting a sentence with 'And' considered a grammatical error?
I remember my teachers penalising me for it, however, I have seen it in other books, like those by Jacqueline Wilson.

In general, this is not considered an error; however, you should keep your audience in mind when doing so. For OBC purposes, it is not an error.
