"Self-published authors can make between 40% – 60% royalties on the retail price of a single book while traditionally published authors usually make between 10%-12% royalties."
I honestly haven't published a book yet, but I thought some research might help.
If you are leaning towards earning quick money, some status, and/or validation, getting your book sponsored should be your path.
If you are leaning towards potential long-term wealth, freedom, and/or creativity, self-publishing should do the trick.
Of course, both of these options have their cons and whatnot, but this is a simple summary of my quick research.
As I said, I haven't got the chance to publish a book myself, so take this information with a grain of salt.
But I do hope I was able to help in some way :)

You can try both, however unless you manage to stand out in some way (unique experience or amazing writing skills) you will find it difficult to get a conventional publisher to accept a script. You have nothing to lose by trying the self-publishing route and you will learn a lot about book-selling along the way.
