The Actual Roger by Hank Tucker is a story of a young boy named Roger who, in a world where superheroes are rampant, finally discovers his own powers. His powers are similar to those of the country’s top superhero, Magnanimo, and, although his powers are not quite to the same level, he quickly becomes the famed superhero’s sidekick. The story follows Roger’s progression as a superhero and how he plays a vital role in saving the city.

This book is quite an adventure to embark on! The format of storytelling is through comics, and it has been quite some time since I have read a comic that is quite as entertaining as this one! I particularly liked the older art style that the author uses, as this gives the reader a strong sense of nostalgia for the older Marvel and DC comics of the 20th century. I also enjoyed the author’s ability to maintain Roger’s childlike wonder and innocence throughout the story. There were several instances of dialogue and actions where the reader is truly reminded that the main character is indeed nine years old, and this is a very refreshing aspect! Roger is not made to mature exponentially overnight with the development of his powers, and it was entertaining to see the stark contrast between him and the adults that surround him. What I also enjoyed were the several plot twists that popped up throughout the story. While seasoned readers may not find these plot twists particularly unique, the addition of new story elements, characters, and curveballs really kept the story engaging and fun to read!

Overall, I would rate this book 5 out of 5 for a great story, nostalgic art style, and great characterization. There was truly nothing that I disliked about this book. There is some violence, but there is no profanity or sexual content. This book was also very well edited, as I found no grammatical errors. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a light-hearted superhero comic to read!
