In the second section, Code of Disjointed Letters, Elif narrates her feelings about the loss of love: "No matter where I was, my mind was always with me..." Did you find this section of Elif's narrative relatable?

I confess wanting to take a vacation from myself. I was nodding along to her reaction of how dark and frustrating loneliness can be.

I just finished the second section and she is the only character I have found relatable.

Elif was a very relatable character, and I felt sorry for her. I agree with Bluemel about her being the only relatable character in the book, as the others were a bit too "unique" to be realistic.

I love how your phrasing for why you could not connect with the other characters! I felt sorry for her but I also wonder if her love for Oktay was an addiction.

Good point! Now that I think about it, Elif exhibited textbook codependent behavior!

That is it exactly! She was codependent to the extreme. I was angry at how much she ignored the warning signs Oktay was presenting. If they got him help sooner, who knows how that story could have ended.

I completely agree. While I may think it was irresponsible to ignore all of his symptoms for so long, her reasoning and reluctance is understandable.

I can relate to the feeling of wanting to escape my own mind, I have a short story touching on this very subject about being a prisoner in my own mind.

She was definitely a relatable character. It's so true that our minds are the only things that we can't ever escape. No matter what, our minds will be with us. Her section of the book was my favorite part.

I really enjoyed reading this section of the book. I can't even begin to understand what it must be like to watch a loved one begin to behave so erratically. However, I can understand being in denial about it. It's human nature to reject at first information that we cannot understand.

Yeah I definitely find this quote relatable. I feel like sometimes life does get really hard and there are times you just wanna shut out the world and live vicariously through some better place in your mind.
