Very well put! I have no clue how the author was able to read those scenes and think to herself, "Wow, I really nailed that." Sex scenes are presented in novels all of the time without being tacky and cringe worthy.
So true. They should really be edited.

I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this yet, but I think I found the wolf mating scene one of the least creepy. I think it is because the author left out all of the flowery descriptions and just stated what was happening.

As far as I'm concerned the best erotic scenes are short to nonexistent. The last book I read went into so much detail I wanted to scream, "Enough, already. Just get on with the story!" I think sex scenes always slow down the dramatic action. Everything comes to a grinding (sometimes literally) halt while the characters do their thing. I would love for John Cleese to show up at the start and say, "And now for something completely different," and cut away to something, anything else.

This is a bit of a pandemic, isn't it? So many good books are ruined by the obligatory sex (but we can't say that) scenes. Authors who avoid cliches elsewhere in their writing will fall back on the same tired phrases and images. While the sex scene here was inevitable, the way the characters were thrown together and served to propel the plot, the writing was more than uncomfortable. We know Catrin's sister was also having sex, but didn't have to watch through the keyhole of poor prose.

That is a really great way to put it. I love that phrase!

There was a scene where her brother was having sex as a wolf...it had a lot lest detail. While slightly disturbing, it was off-putting because of the plot-not the terrible prose.

Very true. I mean, if a writer decides to add erotic scenes, let him/her do it fully and immerse us (the readers) into the scene completely

Well, i won't speak for others but i love erotic scenes, i love when a writer includes it in his/her book no matter what kind of book it is, but let it not be much though, too much of everything is bad.

I read a lot if erotica but this sounds badly written and shy. if you're going to input sexual content then do it well. Frankly I'll just skip those parts.

I liked the book, the plot and the search for the author in the direction of the strength of the characters. I liked the script, you can certainly pay attention to scenes of eroticism and write more in vivid words. why? I explain to many people like such scenes and descriptions, people all different authors and read, but many are looking for this particular highlight in the books. I like it . I advise reading to other people.

No phrases. It's not a children's book. It's better to be more visual.

JuliaKay wrote: 01 Sep 2018, 16:09 I think writing erotic scenes is more difficult than people realize. It seems like the author was trying to somehow be tasteful and keep the historical content instead of using simple adult language, and instead, it ended up being corny and redundant. I don't mind erotic scenes in books as long as there aren't too many.
That was my impression too. I think that if Apollo's Raven wasn't meant to be a historical fiction, then the scenes would have been more erotically written and not written with euphemisms.

I think the tone of the erotic scenes clashes with the tone of much of the rest of the book. The characters seem drawn to each other. The writer would have been better served to focus on that and play down the flowery erotic descriptions.

THe erotic scenes of the book makes you want to read for more because you know that after those scenes, there is something great that is about to happen. It awakens your interest, it draws your attention. It is something that is a not really that common but it makes you wonder.

I think the imagery the author uses in describing erotic encounters is just appropriate. Sex was viewed with decorum in days of yore and this being a historical novel it should remain as such.
