"There are only seven plots"

Post by Matthew »

Have you come across this before? As a writer, I am hostile to this idea for emotional reasons. But it seems strange that I've never come across what these seven plots are. The closest I ever came to an answer of any sort was when someone told me, "You know, man vs. nature, man vs. society, that sort of thing," which seems to me to be a confusion between plot and theme.

Does anyone know what these seven plots are? Does anyone agree with me that the human imagination can and has strectched beyond seven plotlines? How did this idea get into circulation anyhow?
