The Purpose for Pets

I saw it as a way for them to have companionship while they were stranded in Echoland. I don't remember them being explained either.

You're right, that wasn't really explained. I guess I took it as they were giving a companion to the orphans.

Yeah it definitly was not explained why they were given a pet (maybe to have a companion since the children there have been cast away from their families?). I think it was a way to tie in Damian and Dea - the wolf and falcon at the beginning of the book, but I mean Will choosing Wolfea really wasn't that significant to the plot. Wolfea's story was getting adopted by Will, tied up in a tree kennel, then escaping to Olam Shone with Will. She didnt significantly help Will in any way and wasn't a very helpful supporting role.

yes, in my opinion it's as entertainment for children, the problem is if the children are hobbies playing, so that's the reason why the orphanage gives toys to children who are there

I too agree. Giving pets for kids is a good gesture. To help them connect with someone as they have been all castaway. That will give children hope but the intention should have been explained for the reader.

I was confused about this as well. I love reading about pets, however, in this case it felt a little random and unnecessary.

I enjoyed the pet been included in the story. However, it would have been more interesting if the author explained in brief why things were done that way. That way, readers will understand the message the author was passing across. I agree with your ideology.

Companionship is a relatable theme to use in novels. Pets, whether in fiction or in real-life, serve that purpose.

I remember the pets being there and while I don't remember any real motivation behind their being there I accepted the fact that they kind of act like guardians. There was no real bonding that I remember reading, but their was always this sort of intelligence and love between pet and owner.

I agree that the part about pets is quite unnecessary.

Another question is why was it not explained. I don't think tradition comes in here. The reason may simply be that children like pet.

It definitely wasn't explained and a bit weird to read about. However, I believe that the reason was so that the children didn't feel as lonely in the orphanage. Also, the pets seemed to be protectors of the children they were with.
