Rork Millburn saves a woman from drowning in a brook and finds himself captivated by her beauty. He ignores her dismissal of his advances, and knowing she is married does not douse the intense desire he feels for her. Leila Dempsey is saved from being drowned by a disturbingly attractive man. She cannot forget him in the same manner that she cannot forget she is also a married woman. While his philandering husband's touch simply arouses her disgust, the bold stranger's mere nearness excites her. When a trip throws them together, the intense attraction becomes almost too much for either to bear. Will Leila succumb to Rork's charms and singular purpose of wearing down her defenses? Is his love enough for her to throw cautions in the wind and break her marriage vows? Narrated in the third person perspective, Indigo Sky by Gail Ingis takes us into a woman’s journey to a breathtaking love she has never experienced before.

Ingis' narratives were so good I did not find it hard to imagine the 19th century where abolitionism, racism and the bitterness of war were omnipresent. The clothes, the mannerisms and the environment were described in so much detail I could visualize the past as if I was there. The protagonists’ love story was able to stand out amidst the uncertainty of the emancipation of slaves, giving it more color and excitement. It felt like watching a period movie or TV series.

I felt I was with the protagonists as they try conforming to the harsh rules of society; I felt the tension between them, their emotions and individual worries. It was easy to dislike Hank Dempsey; he was narcissistic, and I could sympathize with Leila's frustrations. Being bound to a devil for a husband was worse than a nightmare. Leila's conservative upbringing and intact moral values warring with her undeniable attraction to Rork were amazingly depicted through the author's narratives. Initially, I found her behavior and actions too naive, and dense at times. But the change to a courageous, feisty woman due to her difficult ordeals was gradual and believable. Her character development and transformation were very enjoyable to witness. Rork's forceful and relentless personality of going after what he wanted was amazingly presented in the book. Clearly, Ingis was able to present an interesting set of characters in Indigo Sky. Even the secondary characters were necessary additions to the story. Sissy in particular will elicit amusement, hate and pity from readers.

I observed only one grammatical error: a missing comma on page 66.

I give Indigo Sky 4 out of 4 stars. A novel with a nice plot, exciting adventures, good set of characters and the apparent use of a professional proofreading tool deserved no less than the highest score.

If you like historical novels of romance and adventure, you will find Indigo Sky by Gail Ingis a pleasure to read. However, if you are sensitive to issues like slavery, infidelity and some bloody scenes or physical abuse, look elsewhere.

A lot of the period romances I've seen are usually set in England, away from the realities of the time, so it's nice to see one set within the abolition period that exists alongside it instead of away from it. That we have the added scandal of a married woman falling for someone who isn't her husband, just makes it all the more exciting.
