Howdy

Post by dixiespurgirl »

Hello! I'm a 29-year-old female from the hills of Tennessee. I love anything outdoorsy and I'm a self-proclaimed "Appalachia Freak". I love anything that has to do with the "old ways" of doing things! I have two children and a wonderful hubby that still makes time to take me hunting and fishing! I read ANYTHING I can get my hands on. Sometimes I think I have something profound to say and sometimes it's just brain vomit...lol. Hopefully I'll be brave enough to share some!

Welcome to the forums!

I've fished a few times in my life, but the only thing I caught was literally an old boot.

I appreciate the welcome! While I know that being a hunter in today's society can sometimes be a death sentence...lol...I must state that we eat what we harvest and it really helps get us through the winters. My husband and myself life very simply and we hope to teach our kids the simple joys in life. We've basically built our own house, harvest a lot of our own meat. We hunt and eat: hogs, deer, racoons, squirrel, rabbit....and we like the occasional turtle soup if there's a big snapper that crosses our paths. I think my love of "old timey" stuff came from growing up in horse barns in the Tennessee area and watching my father...whom is a blacksmith/farrier/preacher (and boy lemme tell ya that combo will keep a kid on the straight and narrow....lol.) I got my love of reading and education from my mother who is a teacher. I'm finishing my bachelor's in human service and management because there is a huge need in this area for guidance in numerous aspects. I get a laugh when I tell everyone that meets me that "my daddy raised me to be a man"...lol...but in all truth he did. Even though we are not as far behind as other areas, life here is still a bit more rough than the average place. We still get our food in the summer from a garden and we have lives that are normally made up of working chicken houses, cattle farms, and other manual labor that many would overlook as grunt work. I, myself, used to halter break show cattle and work horses to earn money. Lately I've turned my energy toward working with children that have been in emotional turmoil. I did 16 mos. as a youth counselor at a wilderness camp until a freak "axe" injury ( I won't say he attacked me, but the axe found its way to my left leg area) created the need for surgery and NOT hiking 6-8 miles a day. Now I'm a tutor in the school system while finishing my degree and hoping to move toward family counseling. I like to have multiple viewpoints to derive my own from and I try to not turn "blindly" toward anything. I think I'm going to like it here!

It is a wonderful things that you can live of the land so to speak. I think it is a wonderful thing and I wish I could do it more. I to was raised to be a man, lol. I was taught how to hunt and fish as well do many of the things that men normally do. It was not just from my dad but also my mom. They have both taught me how to work on cars and do home repairs. I will always be grateful for them teaching me things so I don't have to depend on someone else to do it.
