Well in that case its going on the TBR list!!Fran wrote:Well I thought it was every bit as good as the movie ... and as Mike would says it's a short read - so if you don't like it you haven't wasted much of your life.Mairin wrote:Is "The Last of the Mohicans" as good as the movie? "The last of the mohicans" I liked that one ... thought it was quite an entertaining read ... I think I kept it on my shelf as one I will probably (hopefully) read again sometime in the future.

Maybe I should give it another try some day. I don't know, you didn't have a feeling the it gets interesting after some pages? Because maybe it's just the beginning I couldn't get throughMairin wrote:Well in that case its going on the TBR list!!Fran wrote:Well I thought it was every bit as good as the movie ... and as Mike would says it's a short read - so if you don't like it you haven't wasted much of your life.Mairin wrote: Is "The Last of the Mohicans" as good as the movie? I love Sebastian Faulks too - I found Human Traces threw me a bit with a story I was not expecting!! I've just bought a Week in December - do you know if it's any good?Fran wrote:I loved Charlotte Gray ... IMO a book to be read slowly & savored for the beauty of the writing rather than rushed through to get to the ending. But then I love Sebastian Faulks books and I think I've probably read everything he's written.gloriana wrote:Do you have a book you never got to the end of for whatever reason?
I never finished The Bridges of Madison County, it bored me to tears and just recently could not continue with Charlotte Gray. It was too slow and dull. I hate not finishing books to the end, but these two had to go!
re books never finished: I try to keep reading a book I've started but sometimes I fear they are going to put me off reading altogether and have to stop ie The Hobbit and Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis De Berniere.
Recently I've had to put down the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo although I've been told if I persevere it will get better....?

I'm a fan of Louis deBernieres aswell ... loved Captain Corelli's Mandolin
& Birds Without Wings and I also read Notwithstanding which was very different ... short story format featuring eccentric British village characters.
I love writers who clearly put a lot of effort & research into their books even if that means you have to wait a little longer for their next book. I'm always very suspicious of writers who churn out book after book in quick succession. IMO a good book has to cook slowly with lots of work and blood, sweat and tears.
A world is born again that never dies.

I completely agree with you...I just finished readingthe novel and though I liked certain aspects of it - mainly when we describes the city and its languid pace of life I just couldn't take to Florentino Ariza and his weird waysBambiA93 wrote:I thought Love in the Time of Cholera was awful, thus I never finished it. Sometimes you don't like the main character, sometimes you might even hate the main character, but you can't stop reading about them because they're interesting. The main character in this book just grossed me out. I couldn't stand him and his million escapades.

Glad there is someone out there who couldnt get into war and peace. I tried it many times too. Too many characters!Lennoc wrote:War and Peace. I've started it several times. It is unusual for me not to finish a book but that one I just can't seem to get through.

Hi Freiya - I have to say I loved Lord of the flies because it was so startling when i first read it when i was 13. The idea that children would quickly loose all the remnants of civilisation and turn into mere savage survivors was yes horrific but also very true.Freyia wrote:Lord of the Flies by William Golding. When I was read this book I was horror-struck. I never finished this.
I felt the same way as you do about 1984. I managed to finish it but I found it at the same time both so horrific and depressing - even though it was terribly poignant and true of human nature - that I have never been able to read it again.
