Official Review: Love, Grandma by Ann Morris
Love, Grandma by Ann Morris is a children’s picture book about a grandmother’s relationship with her two granddaughters. The three family members laugh and play, and the book constantly emphasizes the grandmother’s love. The book was written based on the author’s experiences with her two granddaughters, and she includes many fun memories like sharing her button collection and doing backbends together.
This is a fun and lighthearted book, which is emphasized by the author’s choice to write it in rhyme. I enjoyed the rhythm of the lines, and I think this would be a good choice for a grandmother to read out loud to her grandchildren. I didn’t find any errors in the book, so my only complaint about the writing is that some of the rhymes felt forced, making me trip over the words.
I think that my favorite part of this book was the illustrations by David Gnass. He has perfectly captured the fun, nurturing relationship between grandmother and granddaughters. I appreciated the way that the characters were illustrated so that they were always in motion. The pictures evoke a sense of youthful energy that is perfectly matched with this story.
Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed the rhyming lines and the great illustrations, but I chose to deduct a star because I’m not sure that this book is open to a wide audience. The author places a lot of emphasis on the two granddaughters, and it feels more like a book written for her granddaughters than one made for any child.
I would recommend this book to parents and grandparents of kids ages four to seven. Even though it focuses on the author’s grandchildren, I do think it could be a fun book for other kids, especially if their grandparents try out some of the activities that the author did with her grandkids.
