I love/like to read cuz its the only place I can truly feel safe with out the problems around me,
Books also help you in life and helps you to keep calm and relax forgetting about all your troubles, worries and problems.

I like to read because of all the reasons mentioned in these posts. Infinite choices for independence. Real freedom. We get to choose what we read. Books are others sharing their talents and experiences. Books are a vision and a passport to history. They may be only the perceptions of the writers based on their own research and life experiences, but we can actually go back and see these times, even if through others who lived through them. And we can read and research as much or as little as we choose to see how these other perspectives hold up. To check, if we want, on what really happened.

Reading is relaxing whether you are laying on a chaise near the beach enjoying a cool glass of something or sitting by a fire in the winter with a drink to keep you warm and toasty.

I hate waiting in line, but that is a part of life; whether in real lines or on the phone. It makes it so much easier to just take out a book and read. Plus we should take advantage of any and all opportunities to read. There are so many books and so little time.

Can fit reading books to our moods or how we would like to feel. We may feel we want to read about happy endings for awhile, and then we may want to switch to suspense or intrigue. It is all out there.

Reading transports you into a completely different world, with characters you have come to know and some that even stay with you after you finish the book. It enriches your life with experiences and people you might otherwise never have or meet.

Why do I like reading? The answers are endless. The very first reason that I love reading is because I can escape the crazy reality of real life and enter into a new world.

Growing up, reading was my escape from reality... The Library was a magical place that held countless adventures to be lived out within my own mind. I would imagine myself as any of the characters within the book. I have a great respect for books because with books I have become who I am today.

Yes, readers can get hooked on characters. In the last few years quite a few authors that I really liked reading have passed away. I feel sad for their families and for us who have enjoyed their work. I don't know all of them, only the ones I really enjoyed reading. I really liked Robert Parker. I have read Spenser for years and of course watched the television series. It was great that the directors relied on him as a consultant to get the series and characters to be true to the writer's intent.

And I read all of his different characters as well, although I think that I preferred Jesse Stone. I am not sure that Tom Selleck really was representative of the character, but Parker thought so and helped produce the series of made-for-TV movies so ......

To me he is a loss. I think more so because I had read a bit about him and knew how close and his wife were. He dedicated every book to her.

And although she was writing for a very specific audience, I always enjoyed books by Lillian Jackson Braun. I was in a small independent bookstore last weekend picking up some books (as I was on holiday and had run out of reading material) and that is the first I had heard although I guess she had passed away at 93 about a year ago. Her characters were fun and entertaining.

I very much liked Stuart Kaminisky as well. And Phillip R. Craig.

It is very true that throughout history authors have died. It is harder I think when they die in our own times. Again I don't want to diminish the loss to their families. But those who read their books are also part of that family in some ways. And we will miss their work.

I like to read simply because when you read books it is like you're already watch a good film and you are the director because you have the right to create the setting of the story through your imagination.

Well, when I was younger, it was an escape, as I went through school, it was because I was bored with school, Who needs math! LOL Heck, I've learned more while reading that being verbally taught.

Now it's for the pure enjoyment of getting lost in whatever is taking place in the book. Scottish Highlands, American West, Alternate World.

I read to learn new things,
I read to be entertained...for reading makes me enjoy every detail of the story,
I read to empower myself mentally, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually,
I read to be informed by the things that are happening around us,
and more...

All of the above; to escape from the day-to-day drudge, to find suspense, mystery and excitment, to keep my mind active and engaged.

This will be my first winter retired so I am looking forward to being in charge of my own time and spending hours reading by the fire.
