This is a beautifully written historical fiction novel on the Japanese invasion of Korea in the early 20th century. The reader will meet the main character, born into an aristocratic family but who lives anything but an aristocratic life.

He is seen to be thrown in jail for his stance against the Japanese invasion and when he is released due to his illness, he still continues with his fight against such occupation. Bradley is very descriptive in his writing which enables the reader to fully experience the plight of the Koreans, especially the young ones, who feel as though their identities have been stripped away.

The transformation of young and idealistic to older, more realistic and determined is clearly seen and appreciated in the main character.

This book is also very well edited and will be enjoyed by any reader that enjoys historical fiction novels.

This historical treasure trove gives the reader insight on the state of Korea while under Japanese rule. The main protagonist is a sheltered, Korean young man from an elite family. The book itself is a wealth of Korean culture and history. Thank you for a concise review.

I have always fancied stories from Asian histories, and this seems to provide another platform to broaden my knowledge. I bet I would enjoy this book. Congrats on Botd.

I just selected this book for review and I’m anticipating reading it! It sounds a little hefty, but I think I’ll enjoy the historical accounts you mentioned. I’m having mixed feelings about reading this book after your review and I hope I can get through it!

I would fall into the category "casual reader" by the reaction that you are describing to this book. I like historical fiction and am interested to find out more about times and regions far away. However, as you said, narrative, pace, and judicious use of POV's play an important role in my enjoyment of the book.
Thank you for the keen observations and professional review!

Shame, really, because I would have loved to read this book if not only for direction it is written. I am quite interested in oriental culture and traditions, but unfortunately, actual historical events taking place in Asia, are not my cup of tea at all. Anyway, seems like very decent work, so congratulations with BOTD!

Thank you for that very in-depth review. I mused over the title of the book for a while, but decided it was fitting for the genre. I think that historical fiction is intriguing, that the novel has to do with Asian history I think makes it even more intriguing. The energy that Bradley generates from her vividly descriptive language and imagery is captivating. I can't say that I am thrilled about the abrupt ending but I am willing to give The Vanished a read.

Although this isn't my typical genre, I'm intrigued by this book. I haven't read much on this time and place in history. I have to confess, I didn't even know Korea was once ruled by Japan! It sounds like a deep, elegantly-written character-driven novel. Good job! Thank you for your review, too.

Thanks for your honest and thorough review. I'm not a fan of Asian history. I like stories that develop early and build to a good conclusion. I don't think this one is one for me.

I have never come across a historical novel based in Korea. I think this is an opportunity to get a glimpse of their culture and history. Congrats to the author for making #BOTD and thanks for the free copy.
