What's a great fantasy book to read?

So many authors to choose from! I agree with others who have recommended Brandon Sanderson and Tolkien, and would also add Terry Pratchett and Jim Butcher. Look for anything in the Discworld series by Terry Pratcett for something that is off-the-wall fun with some real world connotations. Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series are an entertaining set of novels that feature a wise-cracking private-eye/wizard who solves mysteries involving elves, the arcane, vampires and more.

Kingmaker Chronicles by Amanda Bouchet has Greek mythology in it.
Also, The Daevabad trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty, Poison Study series by Maria V. Snyder, Desert Nights series by Helena Rookwood and Elm Vince.
If you like fairytale retellings, there's Daughters of Eville series by Chanda Hahn.

Most lately I fell in love with James Islington's "The Shadow Of What Was Lost". I can't believe it's his first book. Absolutely wonderful epic fantasy that I can recommend with open heart. I was not sure what to expect when I got it in my hands - it was pure coincident and I knew nothing about the book or the author. But once I've started to read, I go so caught up, I could not stop. It's a pretty thick one but it goes so smooth. Can't wait for next volume!

The Harry Potter Series if you’re like that storyline. I personally loved the Maxe Runner books and also watched all the movies, Flicker World by Brian Cramer was really good too. Another great book is The Name if the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss I hope this helps . Enjoy and lmk if you like any of these

I had been completely hooked with Illona Andrews ' books recently. While everyone might recommend their Kate Daniels Series, I think it's a little too long. So I prefer the others more - The Edge series (4 books, completed), The Innkeeper Chronicles (ongoing, also has characters from The Edge series as some of the main characters, which actually really got me fangirling) and Hidden Legacy series (ongoing). I love how they always have a brand new concept and create this whole new fantasy world that sucks you in. So, honestly, anything by Illona Andrews is recommended.

The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss are both excellent books!

I'm waiting for the third book. But I wonder if the rest of the story can be wrapped up in one book, and maybe that is why it's taking so long.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but have you read the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher? He is a fave of mine. As is Mercedes Lackey and her Valdemar series.

I recommend Holly Blacks book series and if you want something more like mystery- Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

My recommendation would be The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. Fantasy at its best.

My favorite is anything by Trudi Cavanan. She writes fantasy books, but she does them as trilogies. I love how you think the story is going one way, and then she flips it on you and by the third book, the story has evolved exponentially.

I recommend a Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson, the plot is so spectacular and the fantasy feels really well thought out. There is a hint of romance, but its such a solid book, it’s ok without a focus on romance.
