Latest Review: "The Freedman and the Pharaoh's Staff" by Lane Heymont

Re: Jasper Fforde Ffan

My sister-in-law introduced me to Jasper Fforde and I really enjoy the way he intertwines known stories with a new one of his own creation. The Eyre Affair and The Big Over Easy are my particular favourites.

Gannon, you rotten meanie!!!!! I decided to log on to reconnect with my long lost pals and what do I read first "I got married". How could you, I fell for it hook line and sinker!!!!! You are joking, aren't you?

Anyway, I hope you and Fran are well and happy. It's pouring with rain here for Australia Day so it's nice to be dry inside (albeit sticky summer humidity) with a cup of hazelnut coffee and Triple J pounding out songs.

With regard to my darling Jasper Fforde, I've been neglecting him, too.

I agree, Trix. Thursday Next series is my favourite (although The Woman Who Died A Lot struggled) and I've yet to find another writer with his clever twists and imaginative style.

Enjoy the weekend.

Thank you, Fran. Good to be back! I'll do some research and bombard you with JF news asap.

I do know that it's National Libraries Day in UK on February 9th 2013 and he's talking at Hereford Library.

Welcome back Maud.... Jasper has been very neglected as well as Colleen. :D
I have to say though.... Gannon did not marry Fran

I am currently reading jaspers "Something Rotten". Have to say I lost interest about half way through and put it down for a while. Picked it up yesterday and loving it again. So happy Landons back.

Restraint? What does that mean? Actually poor old Queensland is in bad shape with flooding in most towns due to a tropical cyclone rain depression helped along by a full moon and king tides. Everyone is on high alert and it's pushed the Aussie Day celebrations off the front page.

Hey, Primrose, if you check out Jasper Fforde's website, you will see 'Merchandising' with lots of different t-shirts with dodos, mammoths, SpecOps slogans and Toast symbols. Was hoping someone would buy me one for my birthday but it hasn't happened yet.....

No Maud, I am not joking this time. After putting poor old Hades off for so long, I had to eventually say yes. Nothing seems any different (we have been going out for a fair while now). I really owe her my life. I was spiralling down a very dark path when she saved me from myself (better stop now, she reads these posts sometimes at work. She loves Dindin, thinks he is the funniest thing on the internet)

Why are you not posting anymore Maud. I miss you very much, as I am sure Fran does. To be honest this forum does not seem as great without you posting. I used to look forward to logging on and reading and replying to your latest posts. PLEASE come back, or let us know why you aren't posting anymore(wow, starting to sound a little desperate here   )

Crossed fingers that you will start up with the posting again. :D

Thank you, Gannon, I feel pretty special after that welcome back! And I do miss you and Fran! First, I must wish you my heartiest 'Congratulations' on taking the matrimonial plunge. Last month, I flew to Sydney to my cousin's wedding and she has lived with her partner for 20 years. They won't divulge the reason why they finally got married so you are more honest. I apologise for not taking that part of your post seriously enough. Initially I did, but when you mentioned those other outrageous events, I laughed at your ingeniousness and thought it was all part of your clever plan to lure me back. Basically it worked!

My job was meant to be part-time, my preferred work format these days, but it has morphed into full-time stints at different branch offices within our corporation. This has its good and bad points; the staff are mostly good and the travelling is mostly bad.

Hanging onto a steering wheel has caused my internet cruising days to dwindle along with my reading. For a bit of light relief during lunchhour, I play puzzles and games on YouPlay. You can design your own groovy avatar although it's perhaps not as revealing as the ones we post here.

No new books from the man of sci-fi-detective-fantasy but I rather enjoyed his stroll through Hereford UK:

Jasper Fforde Talks About The Last Dragonslayer

Let me know what you think, and don't forget to watch the mild-mannered bloopers.

Thanks for the link Maud, that video is hilarious. Very well done by old Jasper. I will have to watch it again to try and pick up on the bloopers. I loved his references to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (which is one of my favourite books). I have another Jasper book lost in transit again. The other one arrived late, so I am giving it a bit longer. Bit of a worry because books that I have ordered well after Jasper's have turned up. AHrrrrrrrrrrr.

Since you dropped off the radar( a long, long, long, long time ago  ) I have really gotten into David Mitchell. I have all of his books, first edition and signed of course :D , and I love everyone of them. I really recommend all of them to you if you have not read them, he really is a brilliant author. Fran, DATo and I have had some great discussions(which you could have joined in on, if you did not drop off the radar, a long, long, long, long, time ago  ).

I am very happy that I lured you back (you better stay back this time  ). Thanks for the congrats( I was going to invite you (but you dropped off the radar for a long, long, long, long time) . I actually thought that you may have had an accident, or were sick, I was very worried, glad it is work related.

I have a great idea. Do you have an Ipad? If you do, when you are travelling to work you can log on and post with your left hand and drive with your right. Or if this sounds a bit dangerous (and really it is) you can pull over on the side of the road and post safely, or how about dropping us a line on your lunch break.

Ok, Maud I am putting my foot down here. If you disappear again, I am going to stop posting as well ( sort of like a digital Ghandi on a hunger strike) it will be hard but if it brings you back I am willing and hopefully able. So there you have it, my starvation will be on your conscience. :D

All jokes aside, I am so happy to have you back and posting. You were the very first person I posted with and we clicked straight away. Stay put or else! :D

G'day Gannon, it's very nice to be wanted and I'll do my best :D however, I'll skip the posting-while-driving idea!

Will definitely track down David Mitchell; right after I send you a high protein food parcel .

Did you ever watch "Monsters Inc"? I saw it years ago with a couple of young cousins and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Anyway there's an admin clerk named Roz who speaks with a gravelly voice (possible male voice-over) and she leans over the desk and threatens Sully and Mike by saying "I'm watching you, aaaalways watching."
It's both scary and funny.

So remember.....

I'm watching you, aaaalways watching.

Ah Maudster, if you are aaaalways watching, that means you can aaalways be posting. :D

I have not seen "Monsters Inc." but I am sure I would love it. I have enjoyed all the animated films I have seen. My little nephew has it on dvd, so I might sit down and watch it with him. The only problem is he will sit there and tell me what is going to happen next. He is so funny he can't help himself. If you ask him to stop, he stops for about ten minutes and then he starts up again.

Pretty sure that you will like David MItchell, "Cloud Atlas" blew me away. I really hope you will read it, I would love to see what you think. It's funny. I actually bought a paperback copy at our little bookshop here. I had purchased two other books and was going to leave when I saw it there on the shelf. I had already read "Ghostwritten" and "Thousand Suns...etc" and enjoyed them but nothing special. After I read "Cloud Atlas" I went back and read the other two again. It was almost like reading two different books. They are incredible books with so much sitting below the surface, and in all his five novels there are subtle references to his other books.

See ya around (and at the risk of sounding like a broken record) ya better be around or Fran and I will track you down! :D

The groovy sounding Maudster appeals to me. Franster also sounds cool. How about Ganster?

Due to your glowing recommendations, I've put David Mitchell's "Cloud Atlas" on a waiting list. In the meantime I'm starting on William Boyd's latest thriller - already mentioned on Colleen McCullough's thread.

Since this is Jasper's thread, I'd like to quote some unpublished Jasper Speak. Not sure which book they were deleted from, or what they mean, I'll let you figure that out:

1. "They also cited the Timeline Extraterritorially Precedent that stated that a legal decision made in one time stream was true of all others."
2. "They were termed 'Random Temporal Backflashes' and struck occasionally, briefly opening a window to something that might once have happened but now wouldn't. We hoped for something like this to save us during the upcoming extinction, but weren't hopeful - no Backflashes had ever been dated beyond 2091."
3. "Cognitive Dissonance - 'Car pooling is an excellent idea - just not for me'."
4. "Imagine a world where there were no hypothetical situations."
5. "nounS which have had their poles reversed: thursdaY"
6. "It's called 'Watered Downship', a book about a Civil Servant written by rabbits."
7. "Indoor fireworks; little flashes of black in the light."

HAVE A HAPPY WEEKEND!
