Review of Love Above the Clouds
Love Above the Clouds by Ricardo Franco Da Silva is a literary fiction novella. Joao, a university professor, travels each week for a couple of months from Lisbon to Vienna. During his work trips, he notices a woman who works in the airport reception lounge. Joana is friendly, beautiful and leaves a lasting impression on Joao. Nevertheless, he is hesitant about how to approach her. He doesn’t see her for some time, and he forgets about her until a chance encounter alters everything.
The author tells the story from Joao's point of view. Even though he writes it as a stream-of-consciousness novel, there is never a dull moment in this novella. The storyline gripped me, and I was interested in Joao’s everyday observations. He is an intelligent introvert and a massive music enthusiast. The music is therapy for him and a companion throughout good and bad times. It was charming to see a character absorbed in new surroundings, people, and Vienna. When Joao first arrived in Vienna, he felt like he belonged there. That was such a visceral and powerful statement. The author made him an endearing character.
There are certain disadvantages of novellas. The author is limited in going into greater detail and the development of the characters. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this story, but I questioned some of the author’s writing choices. I couldn't figure out how old Joao is or what subject he teaches at the university. Is it math, or is it music? This is a debut book, and it shows. Furthermore, I could tell that the author wasn’t a native English speaker. The dialogues feel like an awkward and unnatural interaction between the characters. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t be opposed to reading more books by this author in the future.
This is a 30-page long novella that has over ten errors, and that is the reason for lowering my rating. Another reason is the disconnected dialogue and choppy writing. Da Silva can improve those things, but it prevented me from rating this book with a perfect score. I can’t rate it any lower because I enjoyed this book, and I could relate to the characters. Therefore, I will rate this book with 3 out of 4 stars.
It is safe to say that this short novella is suitable for all readers looking for a literary fiction book with a romance plotline. It is a perfect escapist story in these times of restricted travel. There are no graphic sex scenes or crude language. Despite some of my dislikes of the story, I’m still happy I gave this book a chance. I’m hoping you will enjoy it too.
