Although there are a lot of things to admire about this book, I just felt the author rushed the romance between Lily and James. I don't know if it's just me, but I felt we needed to understand the characters better. It felt rushed and unreal. I loved the authors way of writing too. This book would get three stars from me.

This is okay in my book - love the historic part, but not the romantic part. Love stories overall are not my cup of tea, so they do not get my praises unless they are awesomely well-written. But that is a personal opinion, so I am not dropping points for that one. What I find more annoying is author fast-forwarding parts I would like to know more, which is the reason I'll give this one a 3 out of 4 stars.

Generally it's a great book, the coming together of a slave and master seemed unique and made the book more interesting. How every the ending could have been better.

The best part of this book for me was the romance. I loved reading of James overcoming the racist inclinations of his family to help Lily. I thought that the author did a good job of portraying that era and its horrors. The author's writing style was also fluid for me. I would 4 out of 4 recommend this book but only to readers who can stomach the horrors of racism of that period.

I enjoyed the book for the most part. The romantic connection between Lily and James has got to be my favorite part of the book. The book's suspense is another feature that made it a worthwhile read.

This book is a perfect 4 out of 4 star read. I just started reading it and I'm loving it so far. I liked that it is filled with emotions and is very unpredictable. When Lily was auctioned off by her father, I almost cried. I am enjoying this historical fiction

I could not put this book down once I started to read it. The first part seemed to zoom through Lily's childhood giving more insight into those years as flashbacks throughout the story. The characters were well-constructed and given a lot of depth. I especially enjoyed where LIly met some rather famous people from history. The cliffhanger at the end was very well done as I ordered the second book immediately. I cried and laughed as I was reading, immensely enjoying the story unfolding. The events at the end broke my heart and leaves me just baffled. Surely things will explain themselves in the next book.

I read this book over a year ago, and it's still easily the best book I've read in a long while.
My favorite feature in this was the plot twist, followed by the suspense (when I wasn't reading this book, I was thinking about where I stopped at). I couldn't predict this book, especially the ending. When the end finally came, I rushed into the next installment. The entire series was a bomb!
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I also loved the realness of this book. The characters were real and lively, the story was as unpredictable and emotional as life itself could be, and the narration (from multiple perspectives) was nothing short of engaging.

The book has an interesting plot and the character development was awesome. I like the scene of romance included in it, but I didn't like that Lily and James relationship wasn't connected at some points. I love the fact that romantic and historical genre was added to it. I recommend it to historical and romantic books lovers as they will find it enjoyable.

I commend the author's writing skills of history and romance genre. The plot is magnificent and the tension between the couple is very intriguing and keeps one at edge although I'm not finished with the book, I can't help but phantom it's requisition.

I’m currently reading this book and it’s so good, I love the way James, William, and Landon relate with lily. I also really appreciate how the author kept her innocence and femininity, without taking away from the strength she has built over the years of mistreatment.

I am not going to lie, I read the book in 2 days. I could not put it down! I have read a ridiculous amount of romance novels and I was starting to feel like they were all the same. This story shook me out of that feeling and I can't wait to read the other two novels.

I thought the characters were developed beautifully. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the novel. Lily and James seemed like a genuine love story. I don't think it was forced at all. Their childhood memories play a huge part in the romance between them. The interactions between the couple at Williams home solidified their relationship for me.

I feel that the author did a great job with the dialog in the story. I could almost hear the southern "twang" as I was reading.

I did not see the ending coming and it made me like the story all the more! I hate when I can predict what is going to happen. The cliffhanger has sent me straight to Amazon so I can get the other books and continue on this journey with James and Lily.

Contrary to popular opinion, I did love the romance between Lily and James. This is because it thrilled me so well. Also, the cliffhanger incorporated added to my overall appreciation of this book. As I particularly derive joy in books that are this way.
