The cover art, although with a striking contrast and a beautiful depiction of the two characters, gave away too much of the story. When I saw the cover art and I had placed Lily, I was wondering who the male was who accompanied her, it didn't take more than some way through the second chapter to place James as that character; from here their romance was revealed without having been placed in the text yet. The only thing left to wonder about was the details thereof; it was a bit of a let down.
The spatiotemporal jumps in the novel where well placed, giving the reader snippets of history to better understand the current situation or the contrast in what is to come. The editing was beautifully done, with clear and imaginative descriptions, and good placement and use of vocabulary.
The Slave Codes are beautiful little inserts to each chapter, leading the reader into the chapter and set to integrate a reality into what was a law.
I enjoyed the idea that the writer puts forth which equals slavery to a prison sentence, it gave me the situation but it also felt lacking; prisoners are treated much better than slaves were.
It was irksome to find the photographic memory that Lily was assigned to be out of the bounds of said kind of memory, it surpasses just that which glorifies photographic memory. Added, this little gift is also a curse of sorts.
The ellipses used to distinguish the phi=ysical circumstance from the memories are somewhat distracting, I felt that their placement was random and would have preferred the use of the commonly used hyphens. I do get the intended effect of the ellipses though, but it still just didn't sit right with me.
I also found the ceaseless stutters in the direct dialogue to be too much, I do realize they were placed for effect and to immerse the reader into the situation as well as to showcase the emotions and so forth, but still: it became too much.
I also found the reading somewhat tedious.
To end, I would just like to add that this book has many other positive aspect, just because I did not enjoy it does not mean that other readers will not. After all, reading, as in life, is a subjective experience and I am too focussed through a Literature degree to just enjoy the book without pulling at loose threads.

I am a woman of colour myself, and it is difficult for me to read about the terror my forefathers were forced to endure simply because they had melanin. However, I am glad for Lily and James's relationship because it was forged against the odds. It was like a light at the end of a tunnel for me, a hope that things would get better. I'm excited to see how their romance develops in the next series.Sudasha Donatien wrote: ↑02 Jan 2022, 15:10 As a woman of black heritage, I find it hard to read novels about slavery and to enjoy them. However, I gave this a chance and did enjoy it. As I thought, there were scenes that were difficult to read, but I pushed on. Lily's and James' relationship felt a little forced and unrealistic to me, but then again, this is a work of fiction. I definitely intend to read the next book in the series, as I am eager to see Lily's character development grow.

Also, the historical aspect of the book, because it gives the relationship a different vibe, a fairytale one.
Nevertheless, the author manner of writing managed to keep me on my feet during the whole time, which is to be appreciated.
I recommend this book to everyone who loves romantic stories.
