Review of Fall on Me
Markus and Hollie live together in a flat and have been in a relationship for some time now. Hollie’s mom loves Markus and wants their relationship to go to the next level. However, Hollie doesn’t feel happy in the relationship because Markus is abusive, even though he tries to make up for his mistakes afterward.
Today, however, Markus is furious with Hollie for keeping him waiting and wants her to quit her job at Bob’s diner, a place she loves and feels valued. Hollie refuses, and a fight ensues. Now, Hollie seems to be on the floor bleeding. Markus hit her again and harder this time. Samson, a new guy in the flat opposite theirs, hears voices from their flat and knocks on the door to find out what’s going on. Samson realizes what has happened and saves Hollie from Markus. Where does Hollie go from here? Is there any way back for Markus? Is there a better man out there for Hollie?
Even though Hollie finds happiness without Markus, what is coming may mean that she has to forfeit her dreams of becoming a veterinary doctor and drop out of school. What problem would Hollie encounter later? Would there be anyone to support her? Find answers to these questions and more in this romance fiction called Fall on Me by Penelope Potts.
There are several reasons to like this book. First, the plot is engaging. I was able to follow the story with ease because the author arranged the tale into an incredible sequence of events. The scenes were intertwined, and I wasn't confused at any point in the story. Another thing I like about the book is its excellent character development. Through the dialogue between the characters, I could tell their personalities. I didn't like Markus. He is proud and unreasonable. My favorite character is Hollie. She has a kind heart, and she is always willing to help where she can, especially with older people.
I was also pleased with how the author came up with one significant twist towards the end of the story. Just when you’d think everything is going well for Hollie, the author introduces another predicament. I felt even more attached to Hollie after I read how she reacted to her crises. Also, the pacing of the story was just right. I followed the story seamlessly and finished the 273-page book in less than three days.
While most of the dialogue was engaging to read, I found the dialogue between Hollie and Mrs. Stuckey quite unnatural. Mrs. Stuckey in the book is an aged widow that stays in the flat below Markus’ apartment. Hollie usually visited her, and during one of their conversations, Mrs. Stuckey referred to her late husband as Mr. Stuckey. Considering how much readers are made to believe that the couple loved each other before Mr. Stuckey’s death, I don’t think it is natural for Mrs. Stuckey to refer to her late husband by that name.
Another thing that put me off in this book is that the author was often guilty of telling instead of showing. I expected the author to allow the readers to decipher for themselves how the characters felt in different situations, but the author always revealed the emotional state of the characters. Moreover, the book isn’t professionally edited. I found up to ten errors in the text. I rate the novel 2 out of 4 stars. One star was deducted because of the errors I found, and the other point was removed because of the problem I described earlier in this paragraph. I didn’t rate the novel any less because I enjoyed the story.
I recommend the book to readers that are interested in romance books. I also suggest the book to people in abusive relationships. I think this book would make them realize that they deserve better. Readers should note that the novel contains profane words.
