I don't get poetry.

This is the place for readers of poetry. Discuss poetry and literary art. You can also discuss music here, including lyrics. Also, you can discuss poets themselves, in addition to poetry.

I understand what you're saying. We don’t indeed have control over things. Perhaps such things will appeal to a massive range of people, but on the other hand, many would find it cumbersome and futile as you claim. That’s how life works.

Poetry is a beautiful thing if we focused more on how hearing the words make us feel instead of what is the author trying to say and breaking down every tiny detail. At one point I didn't get the point of poetry either because in school it was always rigorous with breaking down some form of structure or word choice or some other minutia in my opinion. When I discovered spoken word or short poems I felt much more connected to the words because they were relatable and I didn't have to worry about what the author might have meant but rather what I was feeling.

This is all valid and acceptable. Sometimes we cannot control things in our hands. Poetry is indeed a comprehensive approach, and not everyone would love to dissect such a complex subject.

I understand that feeling. But it really depends on the poet. Most times I read poems and I am completely lost as to what is going on and I look at the reviews or peoples thoughts on them. And it is always this deep thing that I am completely clueless about. But my favorite kind of poetry that I usually understand and I 100% recommend is slam poetry. That is the ONLY form of poetry that I deeply enjoy listening to.

I never resonate with poetry as much but I do always try to understand because I know it holds some magic.

Music and poetry, in my opinion, are quite similar. So don't worry if you don't understand the poetry; in fact, I believe the poets grant you poetic freedom to approach poetry in whichever way you desire. So just read the lines and attempt to come up with your own interpretations.

Personally I can't blame you. Many people have their own likes and hence we should respect their choice. If music annoys you then do what you love most and never focus on people's negative opinion. Justify your stand and don't waiver.

As a writer of poetry myself, I admit that I don't read a lot of the poetry of others. Maybe it is a way to avoid influence. Do I enjoy it when I do? If it is well crafted, clever, or easily understood.

Easily understood. There's the key for most readers. I don't want to have to decipher the hidden meaning, although many people do, and I want to be able to see the world through the poet's mind, as you would looking an a painting.

I try to make my poems accessible, so when I read them, I know exactly how I was feeling at that moment, and hopefully convey that to the reader.

Does everyone enjoy the same food, music, or writing genres? Do you try something different once and a while and discover that it isn't so bad (or that your suspicions were correct and its yucky)?

I think poems are like puzzle pieces and the reader has to find out where they belong in life in order to understand them. Some poems can be applicable in many other ways, or at least seem to be. Finding out where they belong is difficult, if not impossible, but luckily, there are messages to be gleaned from most poetry!

Well we love different things huns, but the least I could say is you are missing out in poetry. There's so much life in poetry.

I also struggle with poetry. The aspect that makes me afraid of opening up to poetry is the fact that most of them usually have hidden meanings. Most of the time, I wonder if I am deriving the meaning the author intended.

The burning reason is that maybe you don’t like it in general, and you don’t appreciate the poem as a whole, or you don’t see yourself being associated with poetry. However, there is much beauty in poetry and one of which is it allows us to have a more profound worldview. Poetry is more than just compounded comprehensive words with or without rhymings.

I can see that your problem is related to understanding. Since poetry interpretation maybe be subjective most of times. You end up confusing yourself while trying to unveil the meaning of some poetry.

That's okay. Not every poem is for everybody. You only get it if it's meant for you.
