The best lyricist today, I would choose Ed Sheeran. Aside from being a best selling song artist, he's a solid lyricist with a skill for expressing emotions concisely and powerfully. He's a master of the loop pedal. Building layers of sound the way he does isn't as simple as he makes it appear. He's a talented and entertaining musician.

This might be a hot take but while I don't personally enjoy her music anymore, Taylor Swift is a great lyricist. She knows how to convey emotion and meaning through her writing. Establishing connections is also something she does really well. She knows how to relate to her audience through the music she writes and I think that is the biggest pillar to her success.
