How is this book different from the other pirate stories?

What stood out most for me compared to others is that there's a female pirate heroine saving the day for a change. Most pirate stories usually revolve around men.

I think there are two things that set this book apart.
1. The slave trafficking issue, which we often see as a legal (but unethical) business conducted by Crown officials, or merchants, but in reality, pirates were also involved.
2. Giving female characters a powerful stance, like Brandy's mother, she had power because of who she was.

I think it is the strong female protagonist that stands out the most in this book, especially that she is involved in piracy which is seen as male-dominated.

I thought the addition of Zhang Yong was pretty unique. I've never read a pirate story that included a Shaolin Priest. I loved how Zhang trained Brandy throughout the novel and showed her how to find balance in her life. The use of his unique weapons and training style made Brandy fearsome and powerful by the end of the story.

I have not read many pirate stories but I feel this one is unique in a few different ways. The strong females running the show was unique for pirates. The slave traders and The Red Witch being used for government missions were unique as well. This story had a lot going on and was not just about the one ship and it’s crew. That’s what made it enjoyable.

There isn't much of a difference between this pirate story and the other ones I've read, except that Dan Hendrickson incorporated stories of human trafficking in the book.

So many elements made this book different in developing strong, brave, likeable and female characters. Brandy and her mother blew my mind when I saw how they were capable of doing anything to defend or protect their loved ones and to what extent they could push themselves. The female characters were pushed to the forefront to shine. This was different and worth emulating.

First of all, I have never read a story about pirates led by a girl. It was distinctive and different from the beginning. Also, I think the book offered a different perspective on pirates. They are neither overly large criminals, nor overly romanticized.

I'm no expert on pirate stories, but I hadn't known the role that pirates played in slave trafficking. It breaks the story away from the usual search for gold, treasure, and other plunder. On top of that, the theme of fighting against slavery is in the storyline, and I find that unexpected compared to a typical pirate story. This adds a level of realism that you don't see in some other popular pirate stories.
