I am be very sceptical of free ebooks (excluding public domain books of course) ...... it does strike me that if the author doesn't think his/her work is worth paying for then why on earth would they think I'd want to spend my valuable time reading it. IMO something free is generally not worth a whole lot .... but that's just me!

We user can be highly beneficial from the free eBooks. We don't have to pay.. and get the desired book for absolutely free. Isn't that great? For example: I wanted to read alchemist, it would cost me abut £5.59 or more. But i saved all by downloading free eBook.

I think everyone benefits from free e books. I have a nexus, for who don't know what that is, it is a tablet. i have kindle on there and i read alot of books. i like the free one because not only do i get to learn of a new author or one i didn't know. i enjoy them very much! so how does the benefit for me i can read a book that's free and then i go and look for the rest of the authors books that i can buy. so it gets them exposure. I also have really bad eyesight so the e books have bigger words so i can read them really easy. Also by having e books i can read at night when my family is asleep and the lights are out. i have over 400 e books and i love them all some i have bought and some i have gotten for free. When they put up a free book most of the time its a series and its the first one a so then you want to buy the next ones so you now what happens to the characters in the books. so to sum it up. I think e books are really good. i get to read easily and the author get exposure as well.

Ebooks are fast, easy to update (say the author forgot something), downloadable (in case you lost your iPad you can download it again), cheap for the author, fast to get out to market. It's about time the publishers were challenged!

I don't recognise the world being described. Seem to be talking as if ebooks are either paid for OR free. In my case, I subscribe to #FREESunday on Amazon Kindle, which means I always make sure (at least) one of my ebooks is free, but only on a Sunday. That means, in point of fact, that while one ebook may be free (but only for one day out of seven) the other ebooks are still at their normal price.
Yes, it's part of Kindle Prime service and, as far as I'm concerned, a way of bringing my books to the attention of readers. I'm happy to offer 'potential' readers one of my books for free, as a kind of sample. If they like it, I'm hoping they'll then go back and buy some of the others.
Of course, a person with patience could simply wait for each of the books to come up, in turn, for the free offer. That way they could accumulate my whole catalogue - at no expense!

I think it helps to advertise good authors. As I have also discovered favourite Authors and series this way. Also every time I download a free book I get an email requesting me to leave a review. Some of my free ebooks I have latter found have gone up in price a few weeks after I had downloaded them.

Straight up i think the lack of actual physical book means no space constraint no baggage during travel . Its light and easy. When the book releases no waiting time for the delivery to happen.

In a way everyone but publishing companies directly benefit, though it wouldn't be hard for them to also get in on this. At the very least they'd be able to see how committed various authors are, if they've published things via Amazon or other ebook site before. I've found some really amazing free ebooks and some gems of authors along the way - but I've also found some really horrible stuff that really should not have been published in any format at all. But for authors that are having no luck with the big publishers or simply don't want to hassle with it, it could make sense. I enjoy looking through them!

I agree the Authors and Publishing houses are getting hurt by free ebooks and I also agree that free ebooks makes people curious enough to go buy more books by the authors of said free books.
