I loved Where the Red Fern Grows and quite a few others that I can't think of at the moment. I was always super excited about the books we read and a few times had already read a book that was selected for class.

I really enjoyed the Scarlet Letter. Our class took around three hours arguing over the characters in the novel!!! I also enjoyed The Sound and the Fury. I am a HUGE Faulkner fan and this is one of my favorite novels. The characters are so well developed I found myself ofter yelling at them and getting so worked up... Teehehe

My English teacher made us read Iqbal. At first I thought, oh, well, this is going to be a boring year. But at the end of it, I had learnt so much, and now it is one of my favorite books. Iqbal is all about being a child slave, making rugs day after day.
[Quote]Iqbal's cause inspired the creation of organizations such as Free The Children, a Canada-based charity and youth movement, and the Iqbal Masih Shaheed Children Foundation, which has started over 20 schools in Pakistan. In January 2009, the United States Congress established the annual Iqbal Masih Award for the Elimination of Child Labor. [Quote]
Amazing read. Recommend it to anyone.

Snehal19 wrote:One of the books that I discovered and have loved ever since, is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Wonderful writing, interesting situations and the witty repartee all made new and engaging reading for me at that time. I ended up devouring her other works, but this one beats all others hands down. I would recommend Emma and Mansfield Park also though.
I loved Pride and Prejudice! Great story, I have read it at least 5 times after school!

To Kill a Mockingbird; A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court; Watership Down; all are examples of books I may never have chosen on my own, but read and loved as the result of class requirements. Compulsory reading in school is important for so many reasons. It opens us to new genres, authors and topics, and helps us gain a better understanding of culture, literature and morals. I am grateful for required reading, because it opened a whole new world of reading choices for me.

I'm saddened to say my high school lit classes were not as successful as I'd liked them to be. Maybe it was my mentality back then, but books I read from obligation and didn't enjoy, are the same ones I wished I had studied more in-depth now.

Yes. Scarlet Pimpernel, studied in High School, way back in 1958! Can't forget Sir Percy Blackney, even now.

We read the outsiders in school and I enjoyed it. Then I seen the movie and enjoyed it on a different level.

The Handmaid's Tale - I wouldn't say I loved... but it definitely had an impact

Also loved studying Shakespeare - I had to study 3-5 works each semester in high school because I went to a school of the Arts - thankfully, I enjoy Shakespeare!

There were so many that we read at school including the classics such as Hamlet and Frankenstein, but some of my favorites are The Giver, Tears of a Tiger, Crime and Punishment, and Freidrich.

All of my English teachers just left us to read on our own and being a general high school kid, I didn't take it too seriously. Now however re reading Romeo and Juliet, I love it!

And, "To sir, with Love" too; though I did not see the movie. The book was memorable.
