How do I research an author?

I am a newbie on this site and am looking for help from anyone out there.

How do I research an author when I don't have a name, only a subject matter.

I am keen to track down some books written by a lady who taught in primary school in Glasgow (I think Polmadie) and these books recalled some of her experiences, both of staff and pupils. I don't know when they were written but I think the time she was teaching much have been around 1950's.

This is a tall order but I have no one to ask.
