Religion is a different thing from Christianity in it's purest forms. If it is Religion, it is very toxic, but Christianity helps by loving.
It also depends on the mindset from the church group, if they focus on love, it would be better, but if they focus on judging and condemning, then there would be a lot of problems.

it depends on many things, some religions, are responsible for favoring only those who respect their own mandates to the letter. In addition, there is the issue of fanaticism that takes everything to the extreme, in any way representing something very toxic in the life of whoever is involved in it.

Yes, religion can be toxic, as in the case of Roxy's mother and how she treated her, not trying to understand or get to know her daughter instead calling her names and saying all sorts of things that made her daughter look like she had committed an unforgivable sin.

Religion can be very deceptive and in the majority of cases it is not biblical. In the narrative we see how the recommendation of the church ruined the already questionable relationship between mama Roxie and her daughter. The church contribution actually aggravated the situation as it was borne from the tradition of men rather than the christian's biblical principles.
