I don't know about being smarter cause some of the books are fiction and they don't have any useful information but you definitely increase your vocabulary intake

Obviously. Besides growing your vocabulary, you learn how to speak with precision especially if you read out loud. Reading books about personal and financial growth teach you a lot. Non-fictional ones broaden you mind and help you have sympathy. Fiction can entertain you while helping you grow your creativity. So it is a big YES that books make you much smarter.

Reading does open up your mind and expose you to a lot. But what I think makes you even smarter or better is taking action on what you read and learn. Knowledge is meant to be applied not to be attained for its sake.

Reading definitely increases one's vocabulary. When reading a book, I learn new words all the time.
I actually just learned the word Satiety.
I also learn how to use uncommon words more commonly like the word deviate.
I never used to use that word and now i find myself saying it often.
