Fuchsia Parade: One Woman's Quest for Sex, Love and Redemption by Heather Martin is a fictional novel about a woman named Kailee Johnson who seemingly has it all. Kailee has a hard but fulfilling job, money, designer clothes, and a fancy car. She has no trouble finding men, and most nights she drinks, parties, and takes men home with her for one-night stands. Kailee awakens one morning after a sexual encounter, realizing she and her partner got too drunk and didn’t use a condom. After popping painkillers for her pounding head, she recognizes she’ll need to see her doctor to get checked for sexually transmitted diseases again. It’s at this moment that Kailee realizes that her partying may be a bit out of control.

Kailee loves to schmooze at work events, generating new business for the construction company she works for. She also loves to grab dinner in restaurants and often meets new people that way. However, she finds herself in compromising situations more often than she’d like. In a moment of vulnerability, she tells a friend about a recent family tragedy. That friend recommends that Kailee see her therapist. Kailee’s decision to go to therapy sets her on a personal journey that slowly transforms her life. The changes aren’t immediate, and the journey is not a short one. The situations that Kailee gets herself into are, at times, funny, heartbreaking, and often very sexy.

This book is written in first-person narrative. Kailee tells her own story, bringing the reader along with her as she has sessions with her semi-crazy therapist, hooks up with men (and women), and parties with her boss. The author does a wonderful job of creating a powerful story for Kailee. The story is surprising in its depth and emotion, considering that when we meet Kailee, she’s obsessed with her Theory clothing, Christian Louboutin heels, and Mercedes Benz car. Kailee had an abusive childhood, and it is a big part of who she is and what she values. Her childhood experiences are entwined with her beliefs and work ethic, and they impact her friendships and relationships more than she realizes.

I enjoyed reading this book. The intensity with which Kailee lives her life pulls the reader in and makes the book difficult to put down. The author crafts a life for Kailee that allows her character to be both powerful, especially in the workplace, and vulnerable. The storyline felt original. Kailee’s character is well-developed; we get to know her full backstory. The author did a nice job of weaving Kailee’s past and present together in a way that didn’t slow the pace of the story. On a less positive note, we didn’t get to know the other characters in the book as well as we got to know Kailee. I would have welcomed learning a bit more about a few of the other characters in the book, especially Kailee’s therapist.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. The author wrote a great book with a powerful female character that was fun to read. There were typos and errors in the text that weren’t distracting to me as I read the book, but there were enough of them to keep me from giving the book five stars. I would recommend this book to adult readers who enjoy fiction with sexy content and aren’t put off by profanity. Professional women working in predominantly male work environments would appreciate the main character, Kailee, who can drive a forklift and negotiate million-dollar contracts. Survivors of abusive childhoods would also appreciate that theme in this book.

Like you, I was struck by the emotional depth that gradually unfolds throughout the story. At first glance, Kailee seems like someone who has it all, but as the narrative progresses, we realize how much pain and unresolved trauma she’s carrying beneath the surface.

You made a great point about the supporting characters. While Kailee is vividly developed, it would have been enriching to get more insight into characters like her therapist or even her coworkers. Still, the novel does an excellent job of keeping us immersed in Kailee’s world and internal battles
