Anything by Edgar Allan Poe is amazing, and I am loving The Iliad right now. Oh, and Beowulf!!

I remember seeing Of Mice and Men on stage when I was a lot younger. At the time it was so hard hitting and shocking for me as a teenager to watch, but I was touched by the story itself due to the characters that were sensitively portrayed by the actors. Have read it since that time and have to say it's one of my favourite books of all time.

The only one I hadn't read is "Of Mice and Men". I have read "The Grapes of Wrath". They are indeed great books.

Fahrenheit 451 was required reading for 8th graders in a school that I worked in years ago. I am currently having my community college students in Oral Communications read 1984. It fits very well in this class I must agree with socialsue that Jane Eyre is wonderful. I, too, didn't read it until I was an adult. I was thoroughly impressed.

These are great books. There is a reason that if you made it through high school you've probably read at least one of these. At the very least someone tried to make you read them.

Kipling's KIM and THE GREAT GAME - worth reading again because of the on-going Afghanistan problems. Kipling's two books are fiction but give so much of the history of the country and of the intrigue and spying between Britain, Russia and Colonial India. Fascinating.

I think another good classic is A Tale of Two Cities. I remember reading it in school after I read Animal Farm. Great picks. I like to compare the writing styles of the different generation.

Have read 1984 and absolutely loved it.

The most interesting things about it is-it makes rememebring history so much fun. A lot of things in it seemed too silly to be true or too difficult to be believed. But soon after finishing it I dicovered that the fiction in the story in minimal and the metaphorical book actually reveals a lot about Russia in 1930's.
