Since I buy most of my books used the spine has already been cracked and I don't care how I handle the book. If it is a new book I barely open the book to read it so the spine doesn't get any creases :)

I try very hard not to crack the spine. Even if it means it's uncomfortable to hold the book. It gets kind of difficult, because I read a lot of big books.

I don't like to crack the spine of my books but I've fallen asleep a couple of times reading a book and sometimes it just happens that way. It's never intentional however it usually means it was a book I couldn't put down. But I figure, I purchased the book myself so if I do crake the spine, I do and if I don't crack it, I don't.

I try not to. Books are like treasures to me. But ofren time i find that i will get so into the book that i will bend certain parts of the book. There were omly a couple times though that i cracked the spine of a book without noticing until i was done reading for the day.

I agree, I don't like to crack the spine either. I don't want to do anything to damage my books, so i'm always careful while reading. This also means I don't like to lend books out too much. They always seem to come back folded or slightly damaged in some way. I may go a bit overboard in this sense but I want my books to stay perfect!

This is a sore topic between me and my daughter. I hate it when she borrows my books and returns them with 'cracked spines'. I don't know how she manages to do that! And she has done that with the entire Harry Potter series and the Lord of the Rings series. I just hate it!

Whilst I totally get wanting to keep your books in good condition... I love to crack the spines on my books, maybe it's sort of a possessive gesture. Also, it helps me keep a track on which ones I've read. Though I do agree with you all about others marking my books, that's just not ok... See! It's a possessive thing.

Heck, no! My sister is afraid to borrow my books for the same reason!

I would never intentionally crack the spine of a book but the ones I spend a lot of time reading do show signs of wear. And I never dog ear pages. I'll use anything as a bookmark before I crease the pages.

I try not to but eventually it happens if it's one I love. The rereading just wears them out.

I don't crack the spine, but I always remove the dust jacket and put it up so I won't tear it!

I don't crack the spine on my books and I don't want anyone else to crack it either. When I read my books I want them to still look new when I'm finished. My pet peeve!

I crack the spine, but I wouldn't necessarily do that with a book I borrowed from a friend.
