Just on the basis of TV or YouTube interviews the author that always strikes me as an unpleasant man is Salman Rushdie - I'm not a fan of his books either ... but I certainly don't hate the man.

I love The Scarlet Letter too--I love the character of Hester Prynne, how she grows throughout the book, and what she represents in the society. Maybe I shouldn't be the judge, though, because I love pie crust too!noahadams wrote:Really? I loved The Scarlet Letter. Especially because it was so forward thinking for it's time.

If in your childhood you want something truly thought provoking and of an entirely fabricated existence, read 'The Edge Chronicles' by Paul Stewart, illustrated by the infinitely brilliant Chris Riddell. So much more exciting. I respect J.K.Rowling as a person however. Just not her media persona as advocate of poor writing.
I completely disagree with both of you. By what criteria is the Harry Potter series "badly" written? And even if it is, how do you reckon that "this generation has decayed...in regard to good taste of literature" just because many people happen to like reading something that you do not? It's like saying, "I like wearing fancy pants! How abominable of you to prefer jeans. We are decaying as a society." I'm sure there are many people who enjoy Harry Potter and also enjoy the other books you've mentioned.

To answer the topic's question, there isn't an author that I necessarily "hate", but I remember that when we had to read one of Thomas Hardy's books for school, I really, really did not like it at all. So, for me, it's just certain books. It's possible for me to like one book by an author, but not necessarily everything they write.

I'll gladly single out Clarice Lispector's The Passion According to G.H. as the most thoroughly and exasperatingly unenjoyable novel I've ever read. The very thought of it makes me gnash my teeth.
[cue sound of gnashing]
And as a tribute to my rekindled displeasure, I offer this excerpt from a review I spied in the Google search results when I was just now verifying the author/title: "Holy crap. I'm not even sure what the hell it was that I just read...."

Mostly, I hate editors. Not all editors, just the ones that leave in enough errors to be completely distracting.

Also, James Joyce. I love, love, love his short stories, but his longer fiction feels narcissistic and way overrated to me—the Emperor has no clothes...
