I will say I'm a fan of Harry Potter, and I'll let you judge me as you like for it. I think the only author I did not endorse as likeable is Nathaniel Hawthorne. He is dryer than a pie crust, and I really wanted to thump myself on the head with his books because that would be more entertaining.

Really? I loved The Scarlet Letter. Especially because it was so forward thinking for it's time.

I wouldn't say 'hate'. As others said, hate is such a strong word. However, the author that I disliked was Rick Riordan. His 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' series was very repetitive. It was the same plot, just different enemies.

I might dislike their books but I can't imagine hating any author - most of the authors I read I've never met them anyway & many are RIP so I never will meet them.
Just on the basis of TV or YouTube interviews the author that always strikes me as an unpleasant man is Salman Rushdie - I'm not a fan of his books either ... but I certainly don't hate the man.

I love The Scarlet Letter too--I love the character of Hester Prynne, how she grows throughout the book, and what she represents in the society. Maybe I shouldn't be the judge, though, because I love pie crust too! :D

Stephenie Meyer. Twilight wasn't that great of series, it certainly never lived up to all the fuss, and personally when I think of vampires I don't think of skin that sparkles in sunlight when I hear that of something sparkling I think of fairies and pixies.

So much more exciting. I respect J.K.Rowling as a person however. Just not her media persona as advocate of poor writing.
I agree with you. The books about the Wizard are equal to computer games. There is nothing like the old classics such as Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Alice in and wonderland, Peter Pan, The Little Prince. I believe that this generation has decayed in its mass in regard to good taste of literature.

I completely disagree with both of you. By what criteria is the Harry Potter series "badly" written? And even if it is, how do you reckon that "this generation has decayed...in regard to good taste of literature" just because many people happen to like reading something that you do not? It's like saying, "I like wearing fancy pants! How abominable of you to prefer jeans. We are decaying as a society." I'm sure there are many people who enjoy Harry Potter and also enjoy the other books you've mentioned.

To answer the topic's question, there isn't an author that I necessarily "hate", but I remember that when we had to read one of Thomas Hardy's books for school, I really, really did not like it at all. So, for me, it's just certain books. It's possible for me to like one book by an author, but not necessarily everything they write.

I've no quibble with authors, but with books...?

I'll gladly single out Clarice Lispector's The Passion According to G.H. as the most thoroughly and exasperatingly unenjoyable novel I've ever read. The very thought of it makes me gnash my teeth.

[cue sound of gnashing]

And as a tribute to my rekindled displeasure, I offer this excerpt from a review I spied in the Google search results when I was just now verifying the author/title: "Holy crap. I'm not even sure what the hell it was that I just read...."

I don't know that I hate any particular author - there are too many good books to hold my interest instead. I haven't read Twilight though (and have no intention of doing so, because sparkly vampires), but anything that gets non-readers to actually read not one book but three (it's a trilogy, right?) must have some merit somewhere.

Mostly, I hate editors. Not all editors, just the ones that leave in enough errors to be completely distracting.

There are no authors that I hate, but I strongly dislike books written by Danielle Steel. In my opinion, her books are not only repetitive, but also poorly written. I caanot understand why so many of her books have been best sellers!

John Updike. I know he's considered brilliant, but his writing sets my teeth on edge, and his characters are all abhorrent.

Also, James Joyce. I love, love, love his short stories, but his longer fiction feels narcissistic and way overrated to me—the Emperor has no clothes...

Joan Collins because when asked who she reads she said, "I don't have time to read." What kind of author doesn't read? A: a really bad one.
