Book style

Post by Benjamin »

Hey, first post. Anyway, im 16, been reading off and on all my life, but I recently found this book style I like. Im not sure how to describe it, The Face on the Milk Carton, (Cooney) and other books like Love Sick and Many Stones. Im not really sure what kind of genre (more specifically than novel fiction that is) and was wondering if anyone new similar books that fit into this kind of story line. Like teenager with serious issues or whatever. Thanks.

I think it's called a bildungsroman, where the protagonist faces issues during the novel and emerges at the end of the text with more knowledge of themselves and being a better person or something. The only ones I know are ones I read during school, some of the ones I liked most were; The Giver and Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry, and Black Swan Green by David Mitchell. I hope this was what you meant... =]

The Catcher in the Rye is an obvious choice there, if you haven't already read it. I found the writing irritating, though.

Try Junk or Doing it by Melvin Burgess (explicit sex in it, so if you don't like that kind of stuff, avoid)

Just looked up "The Face on the Milk Carton" and it looks great. Wish my daughter were a little older so she could read it.

Hey. I would check out Crank by Ellen Hopkins. The book is about a perfect teenage girl who becomes addicted to Crank. Ellen Hopkins writes in verse, which is extremely interesting. There is a sequel to Crank titled Glass and Hopkins is writing the third book in this series titled Fallout. This series is based loosely on Hopkin's own daughter's life. There are also some other books that she has written about teenagers with issues, such as Burned, Impluse and Identical. All of these novels are very touching and describe different issues that teenagers deal with. Hopkins is also writing a novel title Tricks, which does not have a release date yet, about teenage prositution.
