I had never heard of Carrie Fox or her organization before reviewing this book, More Than Words. I admired the cover with the cute heart for the letter o in words. The subtitle made the book sound like it was designed for corporate leaders. I was not aware that there was a job that entailed being a social impact communicator working with non-profit organizations.

My misconceptions about the subject matter became obvious early in my reading. Carrie Fox is an advocate for all misrepresented people and her goal is to find ways for them to have their needs met. Her expertise is in teaching people how to communicate. In order for non-profits to secure the necessary money to fund their projects, they must be able to effectively communicate with the individuals who have that money. Fox provides anecdotal evidence to show how words make a difference.

This handbook is broken into three parts. Part One contains three practices: "Dare to Ask, Dig In, and Widen Your Lens." Part Two explains how to be the leader that is needed. Part Three introduces the GEAR UP acronym, which stands for genuine, engaged, active, responsive, update, and power share. The entire text is both interesting and informative. The organization makes it easy to follow. Reading this book is like watching a PowerPoint presentation delivered by a keynote speaker.

Although this information is geared toward a specific audience, the information is valuable for everyone. I was motivated by learning how unaware I have been regarding the words I use. I had no idea using the phrase "having a blind eye" would be offensive to a sightless person. Using words such as crazy and lame will now be avoided since I am aware of the hurt that they can cause.

The presentation of this book is perfect. The editing is flawless. There were no negatives to cause any deductions. My rating is five out of five stars. Anyone whose occupation requires effective communication will benefit from reading this book. If you do nothing more than read the quotes at the beginning of each chapter, you will be changed. Here is my favorite quote by Dr. Wayne Dyer, "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change."

This sure looks like an important read. I agree with you, the cover was cute. That heart really made a big difference in making it more attractive.

Thanks with your review. This book really caught my interest. I have a club at University and most of the times we want to ask for funds from many NGOs or even the university and we usualy fail. I think I will learn a lot from this book.
