What are your thoughts on book crafts?

Post by Peace-Luv-Anarchy »

Do you do any crafty projects using old books? Have you bought any nifty items like the old books made into purses or secret boxes?

I know some people believe that this is wrong but I personally don't see a problem with it, as long as you're not taking a brand new book and creating something else out of it. If the books are used then I'm okay with it becoming another well loved item for a book lover.

I'm personally not a big fan of paper art though...like taking book pages and making wreaths or something from them. I think a lot of those look tacky.

I never did that. If the book is in a bad condition, I see no problem with it.

I've seen all sorts of things made from old books like lampshades, Christmas tree decorations, bookshelves, coffee tables, end tables... one library even constructed a reference desk entirely out of old books.

Beats throwing them into the landfill.

Can you post a link? Maybe some of us who are not so creative could pick up some ideas for the home ^^ Me for example I started being interested in this a while ago. Now I have an idea for a book lamp, let's see where it leads :)

Hmm...I have never thought to use old books form crafts. If I could take an old book and make something interesting with it, I would do it. As long as its old I don't see an issue with it. :) I think it's time to do some research!!

I have a craft book from Bust magazine. One of the reasons I bought it was step by step on how to make a lamp from a pile of books. Something I plan to do eventually.

It's not that I dislike book crafts. Some of them turn out lovely. I just don't think I could do it myself. I removed the cover from a book once to use on a poster for school, and I felt awful afterwards. That's just me, though!

I love book art but I've never made it myself. Some of the sculptures and collages people make from books are so beautiful and I wish was brave enough to actually start cutting into a book to make one.

I think if the book is already in bad shape, why not turn it into something functional. It give the book new life.

I'm thinking about doing some book art projects, but am curious about people's thoughts. (Pretty apt old thread  )
Part of me hates the idea, especially with old books. How many of those copies are actually still out there? There's an author who gives away leftover books with the caveat that they be used for book art.

I'm seriously having a debate in my own head about this! :gaah:

Anyone have any thoughts?

I suppose it would be okay as long as you weren't disrespecting it. I haven't seen or done anything like this though.
