First, I pick the one that catches my eye, be it the cover or the title. Then I will read the blurb; if I like it, then I will proceed.

I usually have to be in a certain mood for a certain book, for example im re-reading the Harry Potter series and if i wasnt in the mood to continue the whole series i would choose something lighter to read like a manga. If that makes any sense

I always download a lot of books at once, based on topics and usually on covers...yes, I am superficial in this:) so I have hundreds of books, but not always all in the series, and because I hate waiting for the next book to be finished, I read only those that are complete... I usually switch between romance and fantasy, as to keep me on my toes:) and I choose books based on the Goodreads review, or I just get my husband to pick one for me, he usually just scrolls down the list and points at one collection, so it is really random and for me exciting:)

Sometimes I pick my next read based on the cover. I also like looking at this site and goodreads for ratings/reviews before I decide to read a book. It also usually depends on the mood so in summer I like reading light-hearted books and mystery books in the winter.

At first, I used to read the description and mostly decide on that. Also, if there are a lot of people whom I know are recommending it and it was fiction I would have picked it up.
Right now, I am trying to explore all other genres - so I still go to the description first. If I am in a bookstore and have the physical book with me - I read the first few pages to see if I like it. If it's a very popular book - I watch the interviews of the author about that book - generally there are no spoilers there. That pretty much gives me an idea and I take a chance.
I will never again pick up a book only by reading the description. Nor will I fall for those -Best Selling, Award Winning, International Bestseller - phrases on book covers no matter how interesting the description is. I have had huge disappointments in those.
