I'm always reading more than one book at a time. Each book I read has a different purpose. For example, I have my "at work" book and my "at home" book and usually many more. Some people can't understand how I keep everything straight but it's never been a problem for me.

I used to do this all of the time. I probably still would, but with two young children, I just don't have as much time to just sit and read like I did before. I'm sure once my kids are a little older and in school, I will discover that I am reading multiple books again.

Let's see right now I'm reading "The Help", that's on a shelf in the kitchen where I can pick it up when I eat or take it to work, several magazines floating around, then beside the bed is an oldie dirty book called "A State of Heat" and the autobiography of JR Martinez and I alternate reading both before bed. Then I just got three new books from B and N.com, and we're leaving for the library in a little while. So many books, so little time

Why? I'll use a food analogy...it's like having different goodies always available. So the sugar cookies are on the kitchen shelf, the books by the bed could be pumpkin pie and brownies depending what I'm in the mood for, then in my locker at work are the oatmeal cookies, in the car would be rice pudding, always something yummy when I want it! Good thing books don't have calories!!!!!!!

I am capable of doing so, however, I typically do not read more than one book at a time. I like to imerse myself in a books, fully experience the whole lot of the story. I cant really do that if my attention is divided between books, the stories mixing together in my mind. Then again I tend to read one book in a day so there really is no need to read more than one at a time.

The only time I will read more than 1 book at a time is for school, I'll read a book that I have to and than have my causal reading book on the side. Otherwise I always read one book at a time because I can get confused.

I like to read books one at a time, or i find aspects of each melting into the other.

I can only read one at a time. Too many books going makes it too hard to remember how i'm feeling for the characters.

Meg0169 wrote:I generally read 2-3 books at a time. I at least have one in a paperback to read during the daytime and another on my kindle so I can read at night. I think I usually do this because there are so many books to read and so little time. So I run to the library and end up bringing home an armful of books. I try to vary the genres so they all don't run together, but it's whatever I have on hand.
I couldn't agree more, Meg. I read 3-4 at a time, but have been known to read up to 6 simultaneously. I also try to focus on different genres to make it easier to follow each one and I like different formats including at least one audiobook for "reading" when at the office and while doing housework.

I often read several books at once. Lots of times I'll read a book for a while, go on to another one, and not get back to the first one for a few months, or even a year or more. Sometimes it's nice to put a book on hold like that for a while, because then I have it to look forward to.

one at a time for me, i can read a couple at a time but prefer to load all my concentration onto one book so it has my full attention, i guess I feel if i read more than one, I won't put effort into the others and will enjoy it less

I usually read several novels while working my way through a non-fiction book. I read quickly anyway, and when I sink into a novel for enjoyment the pages almost seem to turn themselves. Which is not to say that I don't enjoy the non-fiction, because I certainly do, but I tend to read those more slowly and attentively, usually because I'm learning something new and want to pay attention & retain the information - and, unfortunately, also because the writing is not always as smooth and easy in non-fiction as it is in novels.

Although I am guilty of both reading multiple works at a time and avid procrastination at times; both are psychologically distracting and often produce willy nilly results. Reading only one book at a time allows you to retain more and become better absorbed in the information whether fictional or factual, and writing on a regular schedule forces one to focus more on technical development than the creativity with is more often spontaneous, however, both are necessary for properly honing ones craft.
