ARA Review by Chaotic_Reading of Adventure Over Thunder Mountain
When their mother grows sick, and must venture around the mountain to get treatment, two sisters decide the best way to visit their parents is to go over Thunder Mountain where they meet a dragon.
See, a long time ago, the village people would climb the mountain, as evident from the old trail the girls used to get to the summit, but one day a raging thunder storm started, and so the people stopped going up the mountain. Even with that information in mind, the girls went up, and during the storm, they found shelter in a cave.
Come to find out, that was the dragon’s home, and when he saw the girls, he was quick to explain that he was friendly, and had just been out having tea with his friends, the griffon and the pegasus. He explained how every afternoon the three of them got together to tell stories about their families to one another, and that their laughter would cause the wind, the rain, and the thunder. They didn’t mean any harm, they were just enjoying their afternoon tea.
After spending the night with the dragon and his family, the girls, with the help of the dragon, made it down the other side of the mountain where they were able to get to the hospital to see their parents. With good news — and punishments in place — the entire family was able to go home.
This is a cute story of two sisters overcoming an unknown challenge, and just happen to make some friends along the way. Though scared, they show bravery when they decide to climb Thunder Mountain in order to visit their parents at the hospital.
The lesson of “actions have consequences” not only is flat out stated in the book, but resonates throughout the pages as the girls travel. While staying with family, they sneak out in the middle of the night, knowing they will most likely get in trouble, even though they left a note stating they were going to see their parents. And guess what, their actions had consequences. They were indeed grounded for leaving home and venturing out on their own, but they also discovered the secret to Thunder Mountain during their travels.
The fact that the storm was just three mythical creatures having tea was a brilliant idea, and I loved it. I also enjoyed how the village began to travel the mountain again, as well as the mythical creatures began to come down to the village for tea. It was a really cute ending, and I am glad I found the book.
I will say that for a childrens’ book, there weren’t a lot of pictures. I expected there to be more, but the art that is in the book is fantastic! It is a quick read; I got through it rather quickly one morning, but it’s still a great story to sit with the children in your life and read to them, or with them. In fact, I have already passed along the title to my sister for my niece.
I gave this story 5 out of 5 stars because not only does it teach a valuable lesson, it does it in such a way that it is easily comprehensible to the intended younger audience.
