I keep track of the books I've read (thank you, Goodreads!), and always look over the list at the end of each year to see what trends manifest. I've noticed that I balance almost 50/50 between male and female authors; what is likely to occur is a long stretch when I predominantly select books by one or the other, which is driven by my mood and desire for a type of story and not by a conscious choice of authors' gender.

I voted male, but the question shouldnt have been so black and white. I prefer women when I want to read a good drama or romance, but male writers for evereything else

I would say I enjoy male and female authors pretty equally. I think I won a few more books by male authors, but not by much. I think writing styles shift based upon the individual but haven't noticed any specific trends by gender.

Im not bothered, I love both male and female authors I think it just depends what type of book they're writing, John Green and Rick Yancey are two of my favourite males and the Cassandra Clare, Veronica Roth and Richelle Mead are my favourite females but they all have different qualities I think! :)

I notice I gravitate more towards female authors. I don't purposely do it by any means. I just noticed it seems to work out that way. I guess my subconscious say girl power :)

That seems like an odd question. I find both are able to communicate that at some time or other. It doesn't really matter about the author but the genre.

Not sure with this one, I think I have to agree with Gannon on this, authors are more important than genders

It doesn't really matter to me I don't think that gender matters its if the person has the talent.

I enjoy work from both male and female writers. I can't say I have a preference, but I think the majority of my favorite books happen to be written by male authors.

Why does it matter if the book is good?

I honestly don't care as long as I like the book, then it could be male or female for all I care. I like male authors such as Rick Riordan(second favourite author) Jay Asher, John Green and David Leviathan. And those are my favourite authors. However, I also like female authors such as Cassandra Clare (ALL TIME FAVOURITE AUTHOR!) Veronica Roth and J.K. Rowling. So, in the end, it doesn’t really matter for me…

I agree I think Female authors are able to expand on their visions a little more than male authors, but at the same time when a male author does do a great job with an imagined world it can even top female authors.

I typically prefer to read books by female authors. I will read books by males, but I will always go for a female first.

I think the answer to this will always depend on the genre of the story and sometimes also the gender of the main protagonist. Mostly if the author and protagonist are of the same gender, it is written in a way that the reader can relate to it more. This isn't always the case though, as I've read loads of books written by men telling the story of a woman and found them fantastic reads.
