Is e-ink all that great?

Post by samuyama »

I've heard the pros of e-ink is that it puts less strain on your eyes and feels more like a real book, but I can imagine having a light up screen from LCD is so helpful... but then people say it's straining on the eyes. What's your opinion?

I think it is. I have a kindle touch and it does feel like a real book.

I think that it is superior to the LCD screen. I have very sensitive eyes and the LCD screen is very harsh. e-ink really does feel like you're reading a book. Still, unless you have a eReader with a built in light, you can forget about reading at night. That's why I no longer use my eReader and I use my tablet instead.

I much prefer looking at my e-ink device than a typical LCD or otherwise backlit scree. But I also spend a lot of time on my computer already, and occasionally watching TV/movies with my family. Besides feeling better on my eyes when reading long periods of time, I love how my Nook keeps a charge for so long. This is because e-ink uses very little energy, really requiring it simply to alter the screen, since it is not constantly using it to charge the screen. The charging makes me doubly hopeful, because almost every mobile device I have ever had was broken simply because it became unable to charge from old flip phones, to laptops, to smartphones. Having to put it on the charger so rarely makes me more confident it will last for more years before that darn micro USB input breaks.

For similar reasons, basic e-ink readers are often much cheaper than backlit devices and full-blown tablets. Of course, with the latter you usually get what you pay for, a device that is much more than a mere ereader.

I've been a Kindle user for about three years. What I find useful are the color backgrounds built into the Kindle to help with ease. Before I get into my example, let me say I have the original Kindle Fire. So, for example, if you're reading at night or in low lighting, if you set the Kindle background to black with white words, it eases the strain on your eyes. If you're in bright light, use the lighter or tan background with gray or black wording and it also eases the strain on the eyes. I've played around with my Kindle to see what light works best for my reading tastes. I've gotten to the point where I read all my eBooks with the black background and white wording. For me, it works best. But no matter what, you're going to find reading period is going to be strain after a while, and I do lots and lots of reading. It just comes with the territory.

I like e-ink better than lcd because there's less eye strain. I spend all day on the computer at work and can't do it at home too. Plus, I like having a dedicated ereader that's only for reading books because that's the main thing I do in my free time.

E ink is definitely easier on the eyes. After staring at a computer screen all day at work the e ink is less harsh for me

Definitely easier to read in normal light. If you don't read for extended times, need to read in the dark, or want all the other functions, get a tablet. If you just read a lot, get an eReader.

I have a tablet with a kindle app and an aldiko app which I use to read but I saw my friend's kindle and was surprised by how much the screen looks like a real page.

E-ink is better for your eyes than reading from a tablet as it reads like a real book. You can use it outside as well.

I like the e-ink. I have a regular Kindle and I can read for hours on it. It is easier on my eyes than paper books. The only thing is that it doesn't have any built-in light source and I have yet to find a decent book light. I do have the app for my smartphone and with the ability to adjust the brightness and have a sepia colored background, I find it much easier on the eyes than my laptop. The e-ink is still easier on my eyes.

Though lately I've been reading mostly on my iPad, whenever I use my Kindle I always think "ah, that's nice." So yes, I think e-ink is pretty great. I'm hoping to buy a newer Kindle at some point, but I'm waiting until money is a little less tight.

Me too. I haven't had any issues with my Kindle, but it would be nice to have something with a keyboard or touchscreen instead of just the 5-way. That thing just gets tedious.
