Review of Let Me Tell You About My Mom
In Let Me Tell You About My Mom, written by Casey Rislov with Ron Hayes, we get to meet various kinds of wild animal mamas and their babies, like Brown Bears, Cow Elk, Pronghorns, and Mountain Goats, among others. It's a short children's book and comes with amazing photographs from the acclaimed wildlife photographer, Ron Hayes.
This is probably the best children's book I have read so far, not necessarily because it covers a theme I have a special liking for: nature and its wonders, but because of the way it was written and presented. I will start with its educational value. The book provides a whole lot of information about the animals covered here, like their unique abilities, the various names used to refer to their young ones (babies), the kinds of food they eat, their habitat, and survival tactics, among others. I am grateful for the opportunity to expand my knowledge about some of these animals. For example, before now, I didn't know about the defensive mechanisms burrowing owls use when they feel threatened, and I also didn't know about the incredible sight possessed by pronghorns.
I noticed that Casey was very conscious of the target audience (children) while writing this book, and I really admire this. It's obvious from her precise, simple word choices—aimed to pass across to children the exact information without any ambiguity—the explanations given for words that might be new to some children—as is seen in the explanatory notes provided for such words as matriarchal, nocturnal, and herbivores—and the rich background colors—aimed to meet children's liking for colors. And then, we have the exceptional photographs from Ron Hayes, which show several photos of each animal mama and their babies in different positions and landscapes. I was enchanted by all these, and for these reasons, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. There is absolutely no complaint to report about this book.
It's my pleasure to recommend Let Me Tell You About My Mom to every child. They will not only enjoy the book and its rich illustrations but will also get to experience the depth of mothers' love, this time around, from animal mamas. This book was thoroughly proofread.
