I remember the racial tension of 1968 very well. Those were difficult days from which many had to gather strength to survive and subsequently thrive. Any stories of racial injustice from times gone by are in great need these days as prejudices still abound and need to be curtailed through education and compelling storytelling. Thanks to Ms. Skipper for her contribution to making that happen.

Thank you for such a detailed review of 'Deceptive Calm,' [Reviewer’s Name]. I found your insights into Vanessa's struggle with her identity and the depiction of racial tensions in 1968 particularly compelling. Trisha's courage and loyalty, along with Sis Rosalie's humor, sound like they add depth to the narrative. Your description really brings out the emotional layers of the story. This book is definitely going on my reading list!

An inspirational book tackling essential matters in the society. While racism was predominant in the past it still persists and the author is keen to point it out.

I love this story about friendship, racism, and belonging. Will Trisha and Vanessa's friendship withstand the hardships of a racist society?

This book seems to have great character work. It deals with discrimination and acceptance as a black person but also includes white characters.

Wonderful book. Discrimination has always been present in every aspect of our lives and will always be present. But stand up against it needs courage, which is portrayed exceptionally in this book. Congrats on BOTD!

This book portrays the theme of belonging where the main character Venessa, grapples with self acceptance and difficulty in accepting her identity as a black woman in society or community.
The book also unfolds the gripping story of racial tensions and unexpected alliances in1968.
It also weaves through the complexities of race, friendship and identity revealing Venessa's struggle with her identity as a black woman who was mistaken for white in society.
As the characters navigate social prejudices, the story explores themes of guilt , resilience and quest for belonging.
The distinctive combination of humor and genuine love that Sis Rosalie's brings to the story enriches the narrative , leaving a lasting impression on readers.

Racial tensions are of all times. I cannot imagine why people would worry about the race of a doctor if their child needs help. The story will show some light on racism, but also on a beautiful interracial friendship between two women.

This narrative that weaves through the complexities of race, friendship, and identity and reveals Vanessa's struggle with her identity as a black woman who was mistaken for a white in society is interesting because I'd like to know why Vanessa was mistaken as a white.

Humans naturally seek acceptance and belonging in society. Joining a community fulfills this need for affirmation and acceptance, whether through shared experiences, cultural ties, or familial bonds. I love the book.
