I like the author tackling the issue of race and discrimination in 1968. I root for both Vanessa a black girl and her white girlfriend Trisha. Thanks.

The quest for identity and the friendship plot are universal. It's too sad, however, that race has to play a role not only as a source of pride and culture but also as a potential threat. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan and all of its offshoots need to be eradicated. What a moving story. Thank you for your review.

Nice review! I was growing up during that time, and I remember the utter chaos that surrounded it. Blacks were not allowed in certain places or on buses. They weren't even allowed to use the same restrooms as the whites. It was a troubling time.

Patricia Skipper's "Deceptive Calm" offers a profound exploration of racial identity and the societal challenges faced by individuals navigating complex racial landscapes. By juxtaposing Vanessa's internal struggle with external conflicts, the book provides a nuanced portrayal of identity crises and the pursuit of belonging in a racially divided society.

It's sad to think that there may have been a time when society was wary of whether a black doctor (like Doctor Hale) should be allowed to perform surgery on someone like Trisha simply because of their skin colour.

The intriguing title of this story perfectly matches the theme as the story unfolds the racial tensions in society and how the discriminated face the challenges.

I think this book addresses the issue of fitting in in society and I love its underlying messages. Vanessa's challenges are things that many people can relate to even today

Hi!

Deceptive Calm" by Patricia Skipper appears to be a great book to read. Yes, racial tensions
were high in 1968. Many positive changes were made in the African American community. :D

The review is good but it tears me up for Trisha to be the unintended target of the kkk.and how the colored students couldn’t sit by the windows due to a lot of whites being out and about . Vanessa has a good friend in Teresa and Vanessa parents are trying to do what’s best for her as well.

Patricia Skipper's book, "Deceptive Calm," is a gripping tale of racial prejudice, friendship and acceptance. It narrates Vanessa's struggle with her identity as a black woman, Trisha's solid friendship, and Sis Rosalie's quirky personality and rich sense of humour. Trisha's unwavering commitment to her friendship with Vanessa to the point that her life was endangered is entirely sacrificial but commendable. The book is an excellent read for all readers.
