In my opinion, you won't enjoy Anne's novels if you're not interested in history. Historic elements almost completely dominate her books.
I totally agree, it's not that you have to be a history major or an enthusiast, just willing to do some research [occasionally] and pay attention to the order events occur in her books.

I also agree that Anne Rice is a goddess of vampire books, it's not this pop tween crummy romance that dominates today's bookshelves and screens.

Anne Rice's books have a fluid flow to them and can really get you involved in them, like a play in person.

This Jesus thing, I was shocked but after reading it, decided it wasn't too horrible, just a BIG change up.

Blood & Gold is one of the very last books that combines characters from both the vampire & the witch books. Unfortunately, you'll really miss alot if you haven't read any of the prior books. Since I've read all of them, I don't know if this can really stand alone or not, but I do know that you wouldn't know any of the back story of the characters.

The way she writes, it's also not just about vampires per se. It's also a painting of the human condition. Reading her is a journey. She's a brilliant writer.

Actually, I really like her religious Jesus books. Its a good change from her historical vampire novels that can become bogged down in drama. But I know she has been harshly criticized for the change.
I don't think its any different than an actor being known for say action then doing a comedy.
Adventure...one part stupidty plus two parts perseverence....yeah, that's me!

I love Anne Rice...she's the queen of the vampire writing for good reason. Her books have a variety of 'feels' to them; but I think it's fair to say that none of them are particularly trendy or exceptionally pornographic. I've always been a fan of her writing. She goes into exceptional detail, you really get a feel for the characters and the times they've lived through. There is sexual chemistry sometimes to a point, but they do not actually have sex.

I liked Queen of the Damned the best of that series but of all of Anne Rice's books I liked The Mummy the best. Just think of the possibilities....

Anne RIce has definately been a ruling writer in the vampire world. To compare her to Stephanie Meyer would be like comparing Sherlock Holmes to Scooby Doo--except that at least Scooby Doo is a well-made kid's show, whereas TWILIGHT insults its own audience. I feel that Anne Rice has a certain academic/literary appeal, as well as the mass market fandom. Just my opinion.
The joys of literature transcend the evils of the world. I believe in its miraculious baptism and emotional power of the words trickling down the page. To me, there is no higher artform...

I love all of the Vampire series but my favorite is Blood and Gold. Marius has a sophistication and old world quality that makes him one of my favorite characters of this series. I also love Maharet's character and her love for her human descendants. :)

Anne Rice finally wrote a vampire series from the vampires' point of view. They are well worth reading but eventually degenrate as she got closer to 'finding Jesus' as the previous post stated. Another good option (imho) would be Nancy Collins and her 'Sonja Blue" series starting with Sunglasses After Dark. Collins brings a grittier edge to the female vampire instead of all the pretty little nasties everyone else seems to prefer.

You will definately want to read Interview with a Vampire, Anne Rice isn't like the cheesy pseudo-vampire type that Stephanie Myers created. Sorry for all of you Twilight fans, but vampires don't sparkle. No, Anne Rice has the classic blood thirsty vamps we all know and love and she gives her books some real vampiric style.

Thank You! Ever since those Twilight books came out Ive done nothing but loathe them. A friend of mine had bought the books and loaned em to me, I couldn't even choke down the first one.

Anne Rice was the first author I read with regards to Vampires. I totally love her books. They make you think about things that I never even considered. They are more than just vampire books, they are life in a whole new way. These are books that suck you in and make you part of the story from beginning to end!!

Hi! Anne Rice definitely is not the trendy type so you don't have to worry about that. Perhaps because I am of the twilight saga culture I found Interview with a Vampire to be one of the slowest books I've ever read. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad it just felt like I was reading it forever. I don't mind long books (Atlas Shrugged may be one of my favorites) but this one just made me feel like there really wasn't a point (or at least one that missed me as I was forcing myself to finish it) and it did not encourage me to continue with her writing. I think you really need to just commit to one of her books and find for yourself if her style is up your alley. I don't ever think it's a waste of time to give something you're curious about a chance. Good luck!

I've heard a lot about Anne Rice but haven't had the pleasure to read any of her novels but after hearing some of ya'll's post about her books has motivated me to check out her work.
