No, I don't understand how I could pick a favorite book. Amazing books are amazing in different ways and for different reasons.

However, I have had it happen where a book that a friend and I loved, she years later re-read and declared it seemed "childish" now, whereas when I re-read it, it seemed to contain great wisdom that I had not appreciated the first time around.

We are not the same person when we go back to a book.

It seems that when it comes to books, one lifetime choice is most likely not to be the safest option.

Simple and wise. :)
It happened to me too, but with a film instead.

I don't know, sometimes the books I loved as a kid are still really good if I ever happen to pick them up to read again (Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth comes to mind.) I just go on, collecting more favorites.

Yes! this is a great question. i have changed my mind on my favorite book on more than one occasion. i like to find new authors to read and in turn find new favorite books. i wouldn't be able to pick just one favorite book since i have read so many books in many different genres. i have many books that i consider my favorite and i am fairly certain i will constantly be changing and adding to my favorite book list.

Always.
Better books will always come along that will replace the current favorite.

My favorite tends to change with the next great one I read. When someone asks my favorite, I am never able to say only one. I'm better at listing favorite authors and giving a few titles by each.

Right now it's The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Before that it was Possession by AS Byatt. Cloud Atlas. Love in the Time of Cholera. As a kid, it was A Wrinkle in Time and A Little Princess and Laura Ingalls. Anne of Green Gables. Judy Blume had her year, and there was even the year of the cheesy romance.

If a book grabs me and wraps me tightly up in the lives of the characters and those people become as real to me as my own face in the mirror, it's a favorite.

I find it easier to list your favourite book/s from several authors too. Although I never have an immediate answer. :?
My "current" favourite books are not necessarily the ones that touch me on a personal level though.

yeah, for me i feel like I'm just constantly adding to a list of favorites. My favorites from my childhood are still there, but they're there for different reasons than they were to begin with. And I'm constantly adding more.

My favorite book is still the same, but the others in my top 5 and 10 have been modified slightly over the years.
The joys of literature transcend the evils of the world. I believe in its miraculious baptism and emotional power of the words trickling down the page. To me, there is no higher artform...

I think that's a mature answer. :) Favourites can still be favourites, the reasons for it are the ones that change.

Actually, that's very true. Mood does influences, specially if one is very susceptible!
