Review of Diotima: Romantic Drama
As a poetry, history, and theatre lover, it was almost impossible to pass up on reading Diotima. I am so happy that I gave it a chance because it was spectacularly worth it. Before getting into the bulk of my review, I’d like to provide my rating, which is 5 out of 5 stars.
Diotima is a beautifully well-done play centring around Hölderlin, a young poet who dreams of travel and learning when he stumbles upon Susette, his Diotima for his Hyperion. The woman and love he has spent his life looking for. What ensues is a love story for the ages that captures your heart in all its romantic antics, and has you rooting for a couple whose end you can sense long before it arrives. Sprinkled throughout are the works of our young poet, his friends, and the people he meets along the way.
This play, in its essence, is romantic, alluring, and devastating. Hölderlin is a character that everyone can root for. In his heart and poetry, everyone can relate to his longing for freedom, learning, and passion. He is effortlessly romantic, and his perseverance for his life and worldly goals leaves readers in awe. Susette also makes for a beautiful love interest. She is his prize and everything he has been looking for, but also just out of reach and unattainable. You can’t help but be gripped by their love and travel with them in all their ups and downs.
The author does a wonderful job of transporting you through time into the age of Hölderlin. The dialect and writing style fit the story perfectly. With hints of whimsy and exaggeration, which is expected from these poets, the play places you front and centre to a time of turbulence and unrest in Europe. However, while the backdrop may be unpleasant, it sets up the story gloriously. The story, plot, writing style, and poetry are superb and are why I have given the book the above rating. There is not one thing I didn’t enjoy and would love for it to hit the stage one day.
I highly recommend giving Diotima a try, and hopefully, you love it as much as I did.
This book seems to be professionally edited, as I came upon no errors.

The play is praised for its romantic, alluring, and devastating themes, with Hölderlin portrayed as a deeply relatable character whose longing for freedom, knowledge, and love resonates with the audience. The writing style, rich in poetic and historical elements, effectively transports the reader to Hölderlin's time, creating an immersive and emotionally engaging experience

However, isn't it odd to describe the book as romantic and alluring, and then place it in line with the Word 'devastating?'
Besides this, I think the drama captures the beautiful journey of love and the ups and downs of its aspects.
