Re:
yeah, I agree with you, its more fun to see yourself through the eyes of these characters that can go on these crazy adventures and live a life much more fun than your own. It is much more interesting and teenage me loved these crazy fantasy stories because like why not vampires for life......tngwstlnd wrote: ↑30 Aug 2007, 01:54 Part of I think is to see new perspectives, to live through fictional characters. Another part is just the whole escapism idea--other people's lives are so much more interesting than my own!![]()
But I think the most fundamental reason is because, like all art, I like seeing what the human race is capable of when they aren't off killing people or arguing over trivial matters such as politics.
Yeah, I'm a pessimist.![]()

I used to borrow books from anybody.
Perhaps it was my passion for learning new things and ideas.
No long talk about this, I love reading
I read to learn, that's it.

I used to read to escape from a bad home situation and the feeling of being lonely. I stopped reading for a good few years in my mid to late teens and my mental health suffered significantly. Looking back, I'd definitely correlate the two.
Now, I mostly read to inform myself (news, history, politics, etc.) because of my current hobbies, but I still am a sucker for a good fantasy or historical fiction story.

In short, reading is healing for me.
I read everyday and I couldn't imagine a version of myself that doesn't read.

To escape, I have an active imagination so reading puts that to work and at times my real life has been hard and a book gave a wonderful way to not wallow in those.
To learn, even in fiction typically a book teaches you something (perspective, history, or just fun facts)
To be entertained, in the same way I like movies and tv shows a good book is really entertaining and fun
To understand, few things are more educational than books.

More than that, a good book is a loyal friend, a counsellor. But also a teacher, and, eventually, a learned lesson. Books foster personal growth and a deeper connection to the self, but also help in identifying obstacles in our own lives and face them. In fact, by reflecting upon a different reality it's usually possible to be reminded of the known one. Therefore, books can work as mirrors and highlight truths in need of understanding.
The act of reading is in itself sacred: the world and its noises quiet and all we feel are the wheels of imagination turning, fuelled by the deep craving for more than the everyday life has to offer. It's like dreaming but being awake and conscious and being able to remember and interpret each fragment of the scenes.
