But I think the most fundamental reason is because, like all art, I like seeing what the human race is capable of when they aren't off killing people or arguing over trivial matters such as politics.

Yeah, I'm a pessimist. :D
yeah, I agree with you, its more fun to see yourself through the eyes of these characters that can go on these crazy adventures and live a life much more fun than your own. It is much more interesting and teenage me loved these crazy fantasy stories because like why not vampires for life...... :wink2:

It's comforting to know that we all reach for books for similar reasons. Definitely to escape, and to learn something new or see something from someone else's perspective. I enjoy that I can read at whatever speed I need to to learn or process the story that I'm reading. Sometimes I read fast to outrun the busyness that is going on in my brain, sometimes I read slowly too soak in specific information that I'm hunting for. Overall, if it can make the rest of my brain be quiet for a while, I am happy!

I like reading because it transports me to different worlds, expands my knowledge, and stimulates my imagination. It offers a peaceful escape, enriches my understanding of diverse perspectives, and helps me grow both intellectually and emotionally.

It started with my mom. She loved to read since I was a baby, so I grew up around books and reading. But then I realized as I got older, that it allowed me to escape into another world and read another person's imagination. I also love crime and non-fiction because I get to learn about people, see how others grew up, and learn about what makes people tick.

I like reading for a couple of reasons - 1) it makes me enter a world and live those moments. That is one of a kind of an experience that differs from every book. 2) it helps me feed my curiosity and stimulate my thinking by reading other people's stories or perspectives.

I love reading right from when I was younger
I used to borrow books from anybody.
Perhaps it was my passion for learning new things and ideas.

No long talk about this, I love reading
I read to learn, that's it.

I read for a number of reasons but I started reading because of encouragement from my mother. She was a teacher for children aged around 6 years old for many years and she always championed reading. My sister and I are avid readers; I at one point was banned from my school library because I wasn't talking much to my classmates.

I used to read to escape from a bad home situation and the feeling of being lonely. I stopped reading for a good few years in my mid to late teens and my mental health suffered significantly. Looking back, I'd definitely correlate the two.

Now, I mostly read to inform myself (news, history, politics, etc.) because of my current hobbies, but I still am a sucker for a good fantasy or historical fiction story.

To escape from real world and to daydreaming all day along.

In short, reading is healing for me.

I read everyday and I couldn't imagine a version of myself that doesn't read.

I enjoy reading for many reasons. I can learn a good bit from the authors of various books. If the book is historical fiction or an autobiography, I may learn about people or events. Even in science fiction books, there may be discussions on science that can be interesting or thought-provoking among other things.
I am an avid reader. I typically read 1-2 books per week. I enjoy a wide array of genres including Sci Fi, Action/Thriller, and Historical Fiction.

As a geologist and christian, I also particularly enjoy books on science and faith.

I love reading because through reading only I can connect with books, which are my favorite thing in the world. Also, it helps improve my understanding of language.

A few reasons that are hard for me to rank:
To escape, I have an active imagination so reading puts that to work and at times my real life has been hard and a book gave a wonderful way to not wallow in those.
To learn, even in fiction typically a book teaches you something (perspective, history, or just fun facts)
To be entertained, in the same way I like movies and tv shows a good book is really entertaining and fun
To understand, few things are more educational than books.

I like to learn about the world, people, places and things I've never heard before. I have a very imaginative mind and it's sometimes fun and also disappointing finding out that my expectations didn't meet reality. But that's the jest of it, I'm in love with reading!

Reading aliments the soul, allows for it to expand beyond the physical constraints of space and time, to elevate above current events and criticalities. Reading provides the wings of imagination as a means to rise and gain perspective. Reading is like living thousands of adventures, adding to a mortal lifetime countless experiences and, thus, enriching it. Consequently, reading trains the ability to show empathy, to cultivate emotions, to be sensitive and sensible.

More than that, a good book is a loyal friend, a counsellor. But also a teacher, and, eventually, a learned lesson. Books foster personal growth and a deeper connection to the self, but also help in identifying obstacles in our own lives and face them. In fact, by reflecting upon a different reality it's usually possible to be reminded of the known one. Therefore, books can work as mirrors and highlight truths in need of understanding.

The act of reading is in itself sacred: the world and its noises quiet and all we feel are the wheels of imagination turning, fuelled by the deep craving for more than the everyday life has to offer. It's like dreaming but being awake and conscious and being able to remember and interpret each fragment of the scenes.
