Review of The Bridge
Title: The Bridge
Author: Jake Lewin
This book is a delightful story about two young men who find love. In the beginning, we meet Tim Hastings, a maths student at university who is unsure of himself and his sexuality, just as many young people are. He is diligent with his studies, friendly and pleasant, yet he feels something is missing in his life and has suspicions about what it is. His flatmate is a young gay man whose nightly activities sometimes cause him agitation and restlessness. Enter the good-looking and lithe Oliver Ayres, and Tim is smitten. The reader will smile as their story unfolds and secrets are shared.
The novel is gentle and satisfying. In these modern times, when there is so much hate, angst, and brutality, it is good to escape to an honest and warm romantic story. The characters go together to a beautiful place, and the plot progresses.
The tone surrounding the female characters is sometimes demeaning. Jake Lewin uses words such as 'giggle', 'excitable', and even 'giddy' to describe them. I disliked this aspect.
The prose of The Bridge is not only easy to read, but also chatty and nonverbose. This inviting style of writing makes the book an engaging read. The protagonist, Tim, experiences his fair share of ups and downs, but as the reader discovers, he eventually finds the answers he's been searching for.
Although sex and profanity are present in the book, they have been kept to a minimum. Homosexuality is not all about sex, and the book reminds us of that. I enjoyed the book and found no grammatical errors. Unfortunately, I found it rather underwhelming and needed the depth that a 'great' book would contain. Never mind; it was an entertaining, light, well-written, and, apart from the annoying treatment of women, a satisfying read. For the above reasons, which describe my likes and dislikes, I will award The Bridge four stars.
