Do you enjoy humor containing absurdity, surprise, and incongruity? Would you like a resource that provides comic relief in minutes? If you answered yes to these questions, you might enjoy the book Bees Make Honey and Butterflies Make Jam by John Offord.

The title of this book has a bit of surprise and incongruity. Wouldn’t you agree? When Offord told his 3-year-old daughter that bees make honey, she replied, “And butterflies make jam.” This reply was innocent and funny. Offord continued this family tradition, of surprising and incongruous humor, with his granddaughter. Offord loved to hear “That doesn’t make any sense!” Offord took the humorous statements and stories used to tease his granddaughter and rewrote them to appeal to a wider audience.

It is important to point out that the cover of this book is colorful and beautiful. It portrays two bright-colored honeybees on a bright yellow honeycomb and two orange, black, and white monarch butterflies on a red jam. You could place this attractive book on your coffee table for guests to enjoy. They will smile and chuckle when reading a chosen page.

Offord's humorous short stories vary from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

“The Beautiful Princess” has an unexpected ending. “Health and Hygiene” shows the absurd way we think about germs. “Buttons and Buttonholes” deals with a common phenomenon we encounter when getting ready to go out. “I Think They Liked Me” deals with naivety, cruelty, and misunderstanding. “The Mitsikini Invasion” is a parody featuring Mars bars. The rest of the short stories are as funny and relatable as the ones I mentioned. Each short story made me pause, think, and chuckle.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was a quick read. Each short story was easy to read. The stories were funny and made me smile. Some of the stories inspired me to research the topics covered. For instance, “The Lights” spurred me to look up the history of the Women’s Institute.

This book will please humorous people from 10 to 100 years of age. It is a well-written and well-edited book. I did not find anything to dislike about this collection of short stories. For these reasons, I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

The title alone is intriguing. Having my own grandchildren of this age I am more than familiar with the type of comment the 3-year-old made. This made me chuckle. This book sounds really intriguing. I really love the though of a book with short, humorous stories. From the description of this book, I have no doubt that it will leave a smile on my phase. This book sounds absolutely mirthful and whimsical. I miss reading books like this. It gives quite a nostalgic feel and transports me back to my colorful childhood when I used to frolic in the grass and cause mischief in the supermarket.
