What do you mean by authentic?

Do you mean the sounds of crackle, pop, and hiss that are not there in a live performance? Or possibly you mean the range of sounds that cannot be reproduced by analog and are thus lost in the translation between what one hears at a live performance and recorded sound?

I was thinking about getting a record player, but I don't know if its worth it, are records better than CDs?

It depends what you are used to. I think records have better sound quality with a high-dollar record player, but a good one is expensive and theres not that many records around any more. Besides that, they take up more room than CD's. If you have limited storage space as I do that could be a problem. I put most of the records I had on CD's and gave the records away. Records were around for a long time, and if taken care of they will last for years and years. I had some that were recorded in the 1910's and they still sounded pretty good. But as for going to vinyl I wouldnt recommend it. Sadly, its too obsolete anymore.

I've been selling LPs online for several years, plus sheet music. Most albums price out at around 8 or 9 dollars, although I have been able to get as much as $25 for one. If you sell, take my advice. There are lots of collectors out there who want only pristine condition and if you state "like new," as I've done many times, and the record has the tiniest mark, the buyer will raise holy hell with you. So try to be as accurate as you can in your listing.

I actually have always liked vinyl. I've always been a fan of the sound quality. Even the "crackle, pop, and hiss". Something about it really gives the music character in my opinion. Luckily enough for me, I don't have very many, but the ones I do have are sweet treasures that I can always enjoy listening to.
Honestly, who doesn't love lounging in a dark room, after a long night, with a drink in your hand, and listening to the sweet sounds of your favorite tunes?..on vinyl?!

Record players are being sold again. I grew up using my Dads and my sister in law recently bought one for her husband. We enjoy listening to records.

Thats true. I would have kept my collection, I had about 300 but I just didnt have the room for them. I kept around 20 of the very best and gave away the others. CD's are handier and more compact. Most of my music is on the computer and just cliking onto a song or album works great for a lazy old guy like me.

I love vinyl records. My dad had a huge collection of them and when I was a kid he used to play a record for me every night after dinner. The pops and cracks served to make the music much more real to me.

Ive heard those scratch eliminators they use on old records when they transfer them to CD's and most sound terrible, like water draining out of a bathtub. The hiss and pops make them sound more realistic.

Sorry, but vinyl NEVER sounded better. We were simply conditioned to think that's what recorded sound was supposed to be, but it's terrible. Muddy highs, dull lows, and warped midrange. Not to mention the hiss, ticks, pops, and thumps created during playback.

Records are perceived to sound 'better' or 'warmer' because the engineers had to introduce artificial equalization to correct the inherent flaws in the medium. That re-equalization brainwashed us into thinking they sound 'warmer', but it's a false perception. Digital is a perfect reproduction of the original source, good or bad (I had a Mozart CD that actually captured the sound of the traffic outside the hall).

Also, those $50,000 record players didn't sound one bit better than my $100 Technics direct drive, because records always sounded terrible, no matter how you played them.
